It seems the key that your using may be "already" used previously, which you will need to liaise with MS to mitigate or the key your using is what is generally termed as "crack" licence. Otherwords, it is not valid,
You will either contact the vendor where this was procured and obtain another valid licence key or procure another windows 7 licence from Microsoft.

I'm getting a message that windows 7 is not genuine on my laptop

It may be that it simply has not yet been given the BillGates tick of approval. If it is an OEM copy of Windows the key (Certificate of Authority or COA) for it will be on a sticker there somewhere on the computer, or packaging. One place they hide it is in the battery compartment (if any).

If you have a COA go here then follow their process (you may have to download a MS validation app first)

If you have no key or did not purchase this Win 7 installation, then, well, you have been sprung, sorry. You will probably have to spend some money. If you did purchase it and cannot find a key, seek assistance from the seller.

Converting from xp to windows 7

You can, but thorough backup of all your XP stuff is needed first, as you will lose much of it. Here is the detailed MS guide

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7#T1=tab01

Unless you have a genuine copy of W7 already, I'd recommend going to W8.1 , as it has now stabilised and will be supported for much longer than W7. However your hardware would need to be good enough. From XP there is no automated way to check this, instead

Windows will start degrading with time. Eventually it will cease to function. You need a valid install. Check your MS Product Key sticker for what OS should be installed, and have license for.

Digital River offers free Win 7 images if you have a valid key.

Hello,

Your license is still valid but you have to call Microsoft ( 1-800-805-4440) and provide them your product id so that they can generate the a new windows XP key for you or may be they will offer you Windows 7. Anyhow, you do not have to buy a new Windows XP key.

Plz provide me windows 7 home basic valid product key otherwise i lose my win 7 today....

You should have received a valid license-key when you purchased a copy of Windows 7. Or, if you downloaded an "evaluation-copy", you knew that it would expire at some date, when you installed it.

Call 1-800-R-U-LEGIT, and have your credit-card ready.
