Hi anitabruce25,
memory is hardware related. Yes you do need to buy a new memory stick if you wish to add/increase your ram (memory).
If after memory has been upgraded and your dell optiplex. Dell hardware is is usually propriety, which means you purchase the memory from Dell.
However, there is a few things that you can try to help boost your speed. First link ... please click on Microsoft this will give the basics of cleaning up. 2nd. please make sure your running one copy of Antivirus/spyware (I like AVAST) and it's free. Download and install Home edition. This has antispyware and antivirus protections. Does a little extra which you will be pleasantly surprised. like scanning email,etc... Lastly ... download and install CCLEANER (aka **** cleaner). Removes/deletes all unwanted temp data. It can also perform a registry clean. which in the end should assist with boosting your pc speed.
Failing this ... then upgrade you ram.
The helpfull staff at Dell will be able to assist with the ram upgrade, they will ask for a service tag on your dell and provide you with the answers you need.

as always ... no matter what type of work is performed on your pc. Please make sure you have a valid backup of your data.

Is it a raid drive? If so you need to format it correctly. If not, check the bios setup and insure your uefi or ahci and legacy options are correct. Check the sata operation should be usb. Check that the boot sequence is in order. Give me more information and I'll help you

Why wont board recognize 1gb ram stick? are there

The Crucial website has the compatible RAM for this system, and they have Dell's full specs on your desktop. If you are trying another brand you might have an incompatible stick of RAM.
Some PC's are very finicky about what RAM will work with them.
Here is the site (complete with price list) for your model.
http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/compatible-memory-for/Dell/OptiPlex%20GX260%20Series/list.html

If you are hesitant about buying another module, you might also want to test the module in another PC or try a different 1GB module in your computer.

Can I use DDR400 (PC3200) RAm in my Dell OptiPlex GX260 PC Desktop? Thanks

Yes.

Maximum Total Amount is 2GB.
Maximum Amount for EACH Ram Memory slot is 1GB.

Use unbuffered, low density, Non-ECC.
2.5 volt to 2.6 volt
Chip configuration is 128Meg X 64 for a 1GB ram memory module.
(Ram memory 'stick')

Suggest you watch where you buy it.
Cheap costing ram memory = cheap quality ram memory
Doesn't have to 'break the bank' in cost, but if it's too cheap to be true, it usually is.
Buy from a reputable ram dealer.

Trying to fit new 1gb memory stick in dell optiplex sx 270 but the system will not acccept it and not boot up error codes of ab yellow but cd green all it does is beep when fitted yet i refit the 256mb...

Hello.

Memory is not interchangeable. Depends on your system, as to what memory to use. An error is telling you the memory is not correct for that PC.

Your Dell Optiplex sx 270 uses DDR PC2700 and DDR PC3200 memory.

Hope this helps.

NMI:parity check /memory parity error

In my experience, you get a memory parity error when one of your memory sticks has gone bad.
I don't know how many sticks of memory you have or what size they are, but you can try removing one and see if the error goes away. If not, remove another and try again.

You're probably looking at buying some new memory. If so, use the opportunity to increase your memory within the limits of your operating system.

Win XP, 32 bit, will see up to about 3.2MB of RAM
64 bit can see over that up to about 8MB

Have slow downloading and slow internet tv buffering system

Do as I did. I installed a Trigabit of RAM to my PC or a Giga Bit will do.It has to do with what your PC has in it now. If it is fairly new (say 6-7 years old) then you most likey have 512mb of RAM. For videos which have to buffer you need more speed out of your computer itself not HD memory RAM memory sticks!! You can get a GB stick for only about $12.99 at Staples or maybe Wal Mart. They have been having these type hardware parts here in the past year.
You'll Get It!!
