Question about Dell Inspiron E1505 Notebook

Water spill on keyboard

About 4 tablespoons of water fell on keyboard. Ran diagnostics - keyboard key was shorted/stuck and sending code with typical beeping. I removed keyboard and attached external keyboard which works and no more beeping. All other diagnostics in extended format are OK. Laptop upon booting goes to Win XP OS then typical black screen with cursor only but stops at this point. Loading XP beyond described above does not occur nor desk top screen shows up. Wanted to run recovery disc but do not have one.

Hi KCJC,
normally what I recommend to do first is open up and take Motherboard out and blow it with hair dryer and expose it to sun for 6 hours(wholeday) to let it dry properly ...coz with every of my customer who don't do but claim that computer work fine will soon have problem in future due to oxide (coz under some IC or chips its still wet and it takes time to become oxide and when it does that mean short circuit). So
Incase anymore question you can post here.
goodluck,takecare.

Keyboard typing wrong letters

Your keyboard is not "typing wrong letters", you have a stuck key. The key is shorting out and is stuck on the letter W. Usually caused by dirt/dust/spills on the keyboard jamming the key so it can't release. Things to try in order of difficulty:
>Vacuum cleaner with brush attachment, vac the keys.
>Paper towel moistened lightly rubbed on the 4 sides of the W key; use a knife blade to gently work down into the edges.
>Soft toothbrush, lightly dampened with water, work the bristles all
all around the edges of the W key. After that do step 2 with a dry
dry paper towel.
>Take the keyboard apart; usually several tiny screws on the rear/sides. CAREFULLY remove the top. You may have to turn the board over, lie on its face to do this. Do not knock the letters out of order or you will have a headache placing them back in proper order! Clear whatever it blocking the W and replace the cover.
If none of the above works the keyboard has failed, needs to be replaced.

Keyboard dont type

No matter how careful you may be, knocking a cup of coffee or spilling a glass of soda over your keyboard may happen. This does not, however, mean the end of your keyboard. If you act quickly, you may be able to fix your wet keyboard to avoid any corrosion of its electronic components or any short circuit which might render it unusable. By following a few recommendations, you should be able to fix your wet computer keyboard.

Unplug the keyboard from your computer immediately after the spill to avoid any corrosion or short circuit. If you spilled water over your laptop's keyboard, turn your computer off by clicking on "Shut Down" on "Turn Off" in the start menu, unplug the power supply and remove the battery. Turn the keyboard upside down and shake it to remove most of the water from it. Take a hair dryer and set it to its lowest temperature setting. Use it to dry any water which might remain under your keyboard's keys. Wait at least 12 hours before plugging your keyboard into your computer again. If your computer is a laptop, wait 12 hours before turning it on again. For Other Liquids Disconnect the keyboard from your computer immediately after the spill to avoid any short circuit or corrosion. Turn your computer off by selecting "Shut Down" or "Turn Off" in the start menu, remove the battery and disconnect the power supply. Place paper towels on a table, turn the keyboard upside down and shake it over them to allow most of the liquid to fall down. Take a few clean paper towels and wipe the liquid off your keyboard's keys. To clean between the keys, you can also use cotton swabs with just a little bit of water. If the liquid which you spilled over your keyboard contained a high amount of sugar, such as soda or sugared coffee, you might have to remove some of your keyboard's keys to clean the surface under the keys with paper towels or swabs. You can do so by lifting them gently with a screwdriver or by using a key remover, which you can find in some IT stores. Wait at least 12 hours before using your keyboard again. If your computer is a laptop, wait the same length of time before turning it on again. My inspiron mini 1018 notebook's keyboard is not working properly. The left shift key appears to be stuck and I really having a hard time using the whole keyboard. I remember having spilled a few drops...

When water spills into a notebook, you should fully disassemble the notebook & thoroughly inspect its inside. Look for any traces of liquid on the circuit boards & on other components. On circuit boards, liquid damage appears in the form of whitish traces. These needs to be wiped off. This can be done using a tooth brush moistened with few drops of hand sanitizer liquid.
Check all internal connectors & make sure that no liquid seeped into them. Dry them if needed.
When you are done, re-assemble back the notebook.
If the liquid fell on the keyboard & you found out that the keyboard is no longer working, then you might have to replace the keyboard.

If that happens with a new keyboard then the mother board is faulty and a replacement laptop is on the horizon. What happens with an external (USB) keyboard?
Hope this helps.

My keyboard will not work

Hi,

Keyboard Is Dirty:

Keyboards should be cleaned with "spray-n-wipe" cleaner and a cloth or tissue on a monthly basis. Ensure that computer is not powered up while cleaning the keyboard. Compressed air can also be used to clean between the keyboard keys. Another tip: clean the keys with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

"Keyboard Not Found" Message:

Your keyboard is not plugged into the computer securely. Unplug it and plug it back in and the problem should go away. If this doesn't work, follow procedure: "Computer isn't taking inputs from keyboard" (below).

Key Is Stuck:

1. If a key does not work or is stuck in the down position, you may try to remove it with a CPU "chip puller" tool. These simple "L" shaped tools are great at pulling out keys. Once you've pulled out the stuck key, you can try to stretch the spring to "reanimate" its action.

Computer Isn't Taking Inputs From Keyboard

1. Is keyboard connected to computer? Ensure that the keyboard is plugged into the keyboard jack and not into the mouse jack. If the keyboard was unplugged, plug it back in and reboot the computer.

2. If the keyboard still doesn't work on boot-up, power down the computer and try to borrow a friend's known-good keyboard for troubleshooting. Plug the new keyboard up and boot up the computer. If the new keyboard works, the old keyboard is bad and needs to be replaced.

3. If the known-good keyboard doesn't work, check your BIOS to make sure it sees the keyboard. It should say, "installed." If the BIOS recognizes the keyboard, then you probably have a bad keyboard port.

I Plugged Keyboard Into Mouse Port

1. Many mice and keyboards today use a PS/2 connector
. If you plugged your keyboard into the mouse port (or viceversa), follow steps 2 and 3.

2. Shut down the computer and plug the keyboard into the keyboard port. The keyboard port is usually marked with a "keyboard" symbol. Plug the mouse into the mouse port (usually marked with a mouse symbol).

3. Reboot the computer; the keyboard should work now. If keyboard doesn't work, check your BIOS to make sure the BIOS recognizes the keyboard. You should see the words, "installed" or "enabled" under the keyboard.

4. If the BIOS recognizes the keyboard but it still doesn't work, you may have a bad keyboard port.

I Spilled a drink on my keyboard!

1. If you spill any liquid in the keyboard, turn it upside down ASAP. Drain all the water out of the keyboard, shaking it if necessary. If you've spilled water into the keyboard, just let it dry. You may use a hair dryer to dry out area under the keys (remember, too much heat and you could damage the electrical components).

2. If you've spilled a soda into the keyboard, completely rinse it in warm water. No soap please! You may use a hair dryer at this point or just let it dry for 2 days. Ensure the keyboard is perfectly DRY before you attempt to use it again. Don't plug a wet keyboard into electrical equipment. Think safety.

5. If the keyboard still doesn't work, replace the keyboard.

Will not power on, spilled a tablespoon of water on keyboard

liquid spilled on laptop is bad news, even thou it might be just a tablespoon, on the right spot might render your laptop useless, its recommended that you Do Not turn on the laptop, remove batt, allow it to dry for a week, if the laptop does not turn on then its possible that internal components might be affected/damaged. if the system is still in warranty and covers accidental water damage, call your manufacturer, if not, bring it to your local computer shop for repair...

Hope it helps!

My return key is not functioning on my apple keyboard.

Buy a new keyboard. They are cheap. One possible solution is to allow the keyboard to thoroughly dry and try it. You can pry up the key and look and see if it needs to be dusted out with some air, or cleaned of whatever was spilled on it. Perhaps alcohol on a Qtip on the moving parts. Not sure what "something" splashed on it. Root beer? Water? Big difference. I would visually inspect, try to dust, then clean with alcohol. Let it dry thoroughly and give it a shot. Short course, buy a new monitor. Good luck.

Due to sugary spill, 4 keys not working on keyboard

Hello,

Simply stated, yes.

If you plan to do that, in the meantime you could also run the keyboard under a warm shower for a new minutes and then hang it out to dry in the sun. I'm not kidding. It will probably, that is probably, work just fine after that so long as all the water has dried and drained out and its not an IBM mechanical keyboard.
