Question about Aprilaire 1710 Dehumidifier

Just bought, brand new. where to put water in? unit will not turn on.

    I understand how the units work. The problem is my other dehumidifier isn't pulling enough water so I bought the Aprilaire 1710A free standing dehumidifier and I'm having trouble getting it to run the test setup. I found out I need to put water in the trap for the initial test run which I don't understand why this is necessary but I'll do that and see if it works.

If you bought a dehumidifier, you will not need to put water in it. A dehumidifier removes water. A humidifier add moisture to the air, and you need to add water to this. Was your dehumidifier running before and then it stopped? If so, it will have a tank on the bottom that will have water in it that needs to be emptied out. Let me know if this is your problem.

    You need to add water to the trap so the unit will drain peroperlly. If you have no water in the trap, while the unit is running, it will **** air through the trap and not allow water to drain by gravity. Basicaly, the fan is strong enough to keep sucking through the drain and over a little time, your pan will overflow. Once you turn it off, all the water will run down the drain with without water, your going to have water pouring over that pan/.

Just bought this unit and it wont drain out the hose just keeps filling up the bucket.


When this happens with a brand new unit, there are a couple of things that can be causing it:

The drain hose/garden hose you're using is to long. It should not exceed 48" in length and must slope down and straight to the floor drain.

A piece of packing material or debris is in the hose concector and inner tubing. To remove this clog, turn the unit OFF & unplug it. Then Using an appropriately sized, 18" long, plastic Zip Tie, carefully insert the tip of Zip Tie into the hole or tubing. Continue to push it in until you reach a bend in the tubing. You will need to gingerly work the Zip Tie past this bend, until it either bottoms out or you run out of usable Zip Tie. Then slowly pull the Zip Tie back out while rotating (twisting) it. This will breakup any clogs. As you reach the inserted end of the Zip Tie, be prepared, as some water may follow. Reconnect the hose, plug the unit in and turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to ON. Set the humidity extraction level to 35% . Allow the unit to run, while you monitor the hose end for water flow. Be patient, as it may take 5 to 10 minutes to start flowing.

NOTE: If you don't have a Zip Tie, you may use something similar ( i.e.a long pipe cleaner), but NO wire coat hangers.

Top of coil is freezing up and unit is not working to pull moisture out. Unit is two years old and coil is clean and filter looks brand new. Should I just throw it in the dumpster or is it worth fixing?


Dan, it may be a case, that the ambient air temperature at floor level is between 40 & 60 Degrees F. This is particularly true in basement applications. Raising it up off the floor onto a sturdy table or counter to, that can handle the weight of the unit, plus a full tank of water, should help.

Also, if there is not enough clear air space around the unit while in operation, it will not work as it should. Maintain a minimum of at least 12" of clear air space around the entire unit.

It would be unusual, but the compressor may be low on R14 Refrigerant Gas. I say unusual, because your dehumidifier is only 2 years old. The more likely cause, would be that the Defrost Sensor has failed, thereby allowing the coil to freeze over.

But, before you throw it in the dumpster (which by the way is illegal, due to the freon gas), Turn the master ON/OFF Switch to OFF. Unplug the unit and allow it to thaw completely, before trying to do anything else to it.You may want to put some old towels under it, to catch any dripping water.

Once the unit has thawed completely and you have reassembled anything you may have removed, Take the unit into the bathroom, turn the shower on hot enough to generate steam. Plug the unit in, turn it on and set the humidity extraction level at 32%. Do not tunr on the bathroom exhaust fan (if you have one) and close any windows in the bathroom. As you exit the bathroom close the door and wait 15 - 20 minutes before returning. Once you do, turn the shower OFF and allow the unit to run an additional 5 minutes. Then check the bucket for signs of water. If you find some, the unit is now working as it should.

If you find no signs of water, the problem lies in what I described above. It can be repaired, but the cost may be almost as high as buying a new unit. Unless, you can do it yourself.

Hi I have a Haier Energy Star Dehumiderfier. The plastic water container that holds the water was washed yesterday to remove dirt,etc The plastic piec on it loosed and now the unit won't turn...

Auto-defrost not working at all


Unless equipped with special equipment most dehumidifiers will produce little if any water under 65-70 degrees. Many state operation down to 50-60 degrees but this was under lab conditions and therefore a marketing tool. The best performance is gained when the air temperature is above 70 degrees. The water you are finding is from melting frost, if you have a humidity problem you should be adding heat to the area to be dried, warm air holds much more moisture than cold and drying is much more effective if you can heat the area to around 80 degrees.

Fan runs, no water collected


It appears that these units have a history of defectiveness. I bought one in late 2010 and it pooped early 2012. If the model is still made, buy a new one, return the defective one in the new unit's packing materials for a refund. Or keep the second (new) unit as a back-up, because the new (first) one may just fail again a short while later.

Humidifier not taking out water


I have the same problem. I have had the unit less than a month. Haier's policy is for me to pay $14.99 so they can send me another one. What a huge ripoff.

No water in bucket


possible that the cooling fins have frosted over...this happens when a cold surface appears in a humid room that does not have enough heat to prevent the freeze-up on the fins. If you look at the fins (above the water bucket), you may see the frost. One solution is to turn up heat in room, followed by placing a fan to blow air through fins if still frosted. If you do not have a frost problem, then ensure compressor is running. If comp is running, then return dead unit.
