Question about John Deere Garden

1 Answer

John deere 68 riding mower steering column won't turn wheel assembly via arced toothed plate. Wheel assembly OK and greased. Some minor play when rotating steering column with steering wheel, but appears to be locked in both directions. Cog wheel at bottom end of steering shaft that engages toothed plate appears to be aligned correctly. Problem appears to be in steering shaft somewhere.

Just had same problem with my craftsmen. There is a very inadequate little nylon bushing supposed to keep that shaft stable. When worn out it allows that shaft to move and puts the gears in a bind. It is located on the end closest to arced gear where shaft hooks to drag link. Its a pain.

I have the same issue with l110 j deere. Setting it on fire didn't work but it made me feel better. Now that I replaced all the burnt parts. Besides it being a pain , How can I fix the original stuck steering wheel.

Place washers under the steering wheel to hold the steering shaft up as high as it will go on the bottom. Make sure the steel bushing groomet extrusion is aligned correctly with the slot. I had to add 3 big washers under my steering wheel.

Does anybody know why steering column doesn't lock on a 5325 john deere tractor?

Its likely worn out.The key switch could be working fine but their is a pin that locks the column spring loaded that maybe worn or damaged or the column tube that receives the pin .
As long as it runs OK and the steering wheel turns its not going to effect anything else but the steering lock .

I have a John Derre L130 and the left steering arm has lots of play any suggestions?

it has a steering wheel not steer arms... your issue is either something is bent/broken, the steering shaft is stripped or the steering wheel is just off

John deere l130

There's a gear on the end of the steering column that's broken or the roll pin used to hold it on is sheared.

I bought 135A used without the owners manual. He told me I need to greese it, maybe each time I use it. Please help me get a free owner's manual so I don't ruin this machine. I paid 950$ for it.

The only thing that would probably need greasing are the spindles on the front wheels. There should be grease (zerk) fittings on the outside of the wheel axles inside the wheel itself. Not greasing them won't kill your mower. Of course, the manual has ALL the lubrication points listed in a chart in it.
John Deere makes it a little challenging to get a manual, but you have the specs and here is the link. I think you can order a paper version , but this link is to download an electronic version for free. The printed version will cost you.
