You have a block on dryer with three screws in it, the new 4 wire has black (hot), red (hot), white (neutral), green (ground) wires. Black goes to left screw, red to right screw, green and white to center screw. or white to center and green to screw holding cover that hides block.

How to connect a dryer

Hi Sheliah,

I'm an electrician and would like to help you. Assuming you're in the U.S. and this is an electric dryer (not gas), you will need to find a 240 (a.k.a. 250) volt / 30 amp circuit to connect it to for it to work. This would be connected to a double pole 30 amp circuit breaker in the electrical panel. There is no simple residential "adapter" to change voltage, current or number of wires - besides the old 3 wire grounding plug adapter in you grandmother's junk drawer. (What is a 50/250 volt dryer? - did you mean a 30A/250V?)

Your dryer should have a 4 wire cord with a 4 prong plug on the end - and it will need to be plugged into a matching outlet. The old electrical code allowed you to change the cord to match the outlet, but now it requires that both the cord and the outlet be a 4 wire type. The old 3 wire cord type is no longer permitted to be used when the dryer is moved or replaced. Of course, 3 wire cords are available everywhere and it is unlikely that anyone will turn you in for changing the dryer's 4 wire cord back to a 3 wire cord type (but I just wanted to tell they way it is supposed to be done). What you do - is your business.

If you have a gas (or LP) dryer, you probably only need a 120 volt / 15 or 20 amp outlet - they look like the standard types - but I think you'd have simply plugged it in and walked away if that were the case.

I hope this helped!

How to wire a plug

In USA, Either the male or female plug connector would be wired the same. Black is hot wire and would connect to the BRASS colored round head screw ( Smallest flat prong or slot ). White is the neutral wire and would connect to the SILVER colored round head screw ( Largest flat prong or slot ). Green is the ground wire and would connect to the GREEN screw ( ONLY HEX shaped screw ). 1) FOR YOUR LIFE SAFETY, ALWAYS USE 3-WIIRE PLUGS WHEN REPAIRING 3-WIRE EXTENSION CORDS! 2) Check the male plug connector. It should have two flat and one rounded prong. The rounded prong is the ground wire connection. If the ground prong is missing, replace the plug. 3) Inspect the outer cover for damage. 4) Do not use cords with damaged outer covers. Taping over the damage is not an adequate repair, for safety, replace the cord.

Just moved, the dryer has a 4 prong plug and house has 3. Should it replace plug to dryer to 3 prong or house plug?

Buy a 3 wire cord and install it on the dryer. Hang onto the 4 wire one in case you move again.

Can u show me how to repair the stand fan motor wiring? where should i put the green color wire?

It sounds like you are working on a little pedestal fan?
and you are reconnecting the wires from the cord?-- inside the housing of the fan motor?

Why did the wires have to be disconnected to begin with?

Did you change the cord?-- or did it always have a grounding plug cord on it?
--- If it had a grounding plug (3-wire) cord before, then there should be a grounding terminal for the GREEN wire-- The other two wires (Black and White) are the supply and return wires for the 110 VAC power.
Tell us more-- see if we can figure this out!

With no colour coded insulation, knowing which wire is hot

Take your old cord out. If you notice there is one side that is a little bigger than the other. Take a meter and measure the continuity from the larger side to the wire end and thats how you can tell which is which. Do the same on your new cord and that will tell you which one to put where.
