I have a HP Pavilion dv4-1220us Laptop and the screen flickers at the bottom. A 1/8" white line will appear at the bottom of the screen-this happens after about 1/2 hour of starting it up. Later the whole screen flickers as if a bad reception--it does this even if not hooked up to the net or power.

SOURCE: Vertical white line on laptop display

Yes, this is a defective screen. The only fix is to replace the screen. It's called a column of dead pixels. Since it is under warranty, contact HP to have them warranty it out or take it back to the place you purchased it from for an exchange. Please take a moment and give this answer a good rating of fixya. Thank you.

Is the computer new? If it is, send it back to where it came from for a repair.

If it is not new and it has passed its warranty, then you may have to take the Basel of the screen and see if there are any sockets that are not connected properly. The problem with doing this, with SOME laptops, you have to take off the main cover off the laptop before you can take the Basel off the screen.

If you do need to take it apart, please touch something like a metal plug sockets screw or a unpainted radiator pip before you do this to get rid of any static you gave on you otherwise the is a chance of permanently damaging you computer

the connections inside laptops are usually just thin wires that go into sockets and the clips that secure the cables lift up and the cable can just be pulled out or inserted with ease. If you can open your laptop and check the connections, just firmly push them all in to make sure they are all connected properly

Good Luck

SOURCE: Hp pavilion dv9000 wont boot, coloured lines appear no bootscreen

This is caused by burn out of the Nvidia graphics chip on the motherboard. You need a new motherboard. This is due to a design flaw (the subject of a class action against HP in the USA). I have had two motherboards fail on me in this way so far - do not expect any worthwhile support from the HP "support" people they are all in India and can hardly communicate outside of their simple repetative scripts. Its impossible to escape them - I tried communicating with head office but all you get is contact details back to the incomprehensible Indian call centre. I strongly recommend against ever purchasing from HP again.

The Hp pavilion dv6 laptops overheat from my understanding and experience. My sister had one and the same thing has happened. I opened it up and did a reflow, which is pretty much fixing the connections. This is a very hard process. This laptop's gpu likes to over heat pretty much. You should either try to have a professional fix it or just back up your files and sell it.

sounds like the LCD cable connection to the motherboard is loose. if you can, refer to the manual to remove and reconnect the LCD cable connection to the motherboard making sure it is securely attached. if this does not work, test if the same display problem will appear to an external monitor once connected to the laptop. if it does, it would be a video card problem and you'll need to get it replaced. if it only happens to the laptop LCD even after reconnecting the cable connection for it, you may need to get it replaced. hope this helps.

If you're talking about your screen, it's probably the inverter going bad.
You can go to insidemylaptop.com and click on Laptops, or HP, and then inverter. These will be on the right hand side of the screen and you will see what I'm talking about. You can probably get one from ebay for just a few dollars (just search Pavilion inverter, or dv4000 inverter). They aren't hard to replace and tey give very detailed instructions. Or you might be able to buy a used or new screen for your laptop and replace it for a bit more. If you take it to a repair shop they'll probably charge you a couple hundred dollars to do it.
Hope this helps

Here is a way to find out if it is the driver or not. Try plugging a standalone monitor into the VGA or DVI drive of the laptop and see if you are getting the same problem. The reason I suggested this is that you could have another display problem on your hands that has to do with the laptop display itself. That may need to be replaced for free (if the laptop is still under warranty) or just get another one on your own. It is pretty simple to remove but I suggest checking the HP site for the technical information on opening the laptop (if it is not under warranty).
