If the volume is low, it may be a bad receiver provided you have it turned up all the way. If its loud but their voices are "garbled" then you may have a handset or a base problem. Do you have another handset on the same base? Does it sound the same? If so, you may have a bad base, if the other handset sound fine your handset is bad. Either way it will probably need to go in for repair.

How can i turn up the volume on this Handset ?

You have not mentioned the brand, or model of your phone (landline or mobile) so I guess 'by doing the opposite of what you do to turn down the volume'.

Not the ringer volume - I want the sound volume increased. I can not hear what people are saying

With many Uniden DECT 6.0 phones, pressing up-arrow during a call will raise the volume.

If this doesn't do it, please add a comment to this question and specify the model of your Uniden DECT 6.0 phone.

The sound from my speaker fades in and out, but the handset works fine.

Since this problem just started, I would first check to make sure there is nothing stuck inside the mic's port. Also, if you have a fan on in the room, that can also cause your speaker to fade in volume.

I say both of these because if the phone thinks you're saying something, your speaker will fade in volume. Whether you're talking or it's just air noise, the volume will fade.

Lost manual

Without the exact model it is difficult to find the manual.

Here the manual for 900 series/996:Uniden EZI996.

I also quote from manual:

Selecting the Ringer Tone and Volume

Base ringer on/off
The ringer switch allows you to set the base ringer on or
off. If you set the switch to off, you never hear the base
ringer tone.

Base ringer tone
Press the ringer tone button in standby mode to select one of 7 ringer tones.

Base ringer volume
Slide the ringer volume adjuster to set the base ringer volume.

Handset ringer tone and volume
Press the volume up key or volume down key (labeled as the volume/ /+ or volume/ /- key) in standby mode to select one of five ringer tones and volume combinations

MY POWER MAX 5.8 SAYS THAT MY VOLUME IS OFF ON ONE HAND SET--HOW DO I TURN IT ON? THANKS EILEEN CARTER beileenc@bellsouth.net

There are different ways to adjust the ringer and speaker volume on your handset. Please see your owners manual for model specific instructions.
On most single handset units:
Ringer volume: Press the volume up or down arrow rapidly to change the ringer volume.
Speaker volume: When talking on the handset press the volume up and down arrow to increase or decrease the volume.
On other models:
Ringer volume
In standby mode, press the volume up key or volume
down key on the handset or base to select one of three
ringer volume (Off, Low, or High).

Earpiece and Speaker Volume
You can select from among of six volume levels on the
handset, and ten levels on the base. Pressing the
volume up key or volume down key on the handset or
base during a call will change the earpiece or speaker
volume. This setting will remain in effect after the
telephone call has ended.
If you press the volume up key when the earpiece is at
the maximum volume level, an error tone sounds.
The error tone also sounds if you press the volume down key at the lowest volume.

Earpiece volume

There should be a button on the bottom right of the phone. It is circle with an arrow pointing up, down, left and right. try pushing up and see if that helps - in the manual it says that should change the volume.
