Sony have a page offering information and support, including downloads (Picture Motion Browser) for this camera at THIS LINK
This type of camera transfers video to computer with a Firewire (Sony call this i.Link) connection. Some mini-DV and D8 cameras have a USB connection which is used for stills ONLY. There is a tutorial for downloading videos to computer linked from the above site.
first you install the cable and connect cable with pc and select mode Data then click on start-->printers and faxes-->Scanners and Cameras from here you can load all picture on your's pc.
Second go to cyber cafe open google and write yours cam coder model and press enter download appropriate file fpr installing on pc.
try to use sony discs they are already formatted for sony video cams. less likely to getting errors. try putting it in a cpu and finallize from its burner drive. if not basically you have lost all the footage.
i know exactly whats your problem because i experienced that myself and i figured out the cause of it. what you gonna do is format your OS like windows xp sp1 and after that install the cd driver again camed from your camcorder. it should fix your problem after that. this is what happen to my camcorder and my pc because everytime i put my cam with the use of usb my computer starts too. so after i format my computer and did the same thing,it finally works! hope this helps!
you usually can finalize in other brand camcorders-I've done it and it should work-I wouldn't think you need to finalize disc to stream from cam to pc-try it first w/out or see if only rw's will do it--r may not-some cams can only usb still photos so make sure your model supports video through usb
I'm confused by your ?-you state you have a HC14 Mini DV cam which is tape but your asking about dvd-if you have dvd you can only delete on rw discs-not r type-doesn't matter before or after just won't work-if not transfer to computer and edit that way and reburn new dvd
