Does anyone know if the Verifone MX870 stores any critical customer information (ex. credit card numbers, customer names, etc.) Also, I presume that the merchant ID is completely inaccessible due to the fact that it's encrypted and that the tamper alarm will necessitate that the unit be cleared entirely before it will operate again. Are my assumptions correct here?

Can you clarify what you mean by "that would be illegal"? As long as the unit meets the PCI requirements (critical data is encrypted if stored), then would it be illegal?

Yes your assumptions are correct. The unit does not store the customer information as that will be illegal and amount to fraudulent activities. Also it is highly secured so the merchant ID is completely inaccessible.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

By that will be Illegal i mean it wont meet PCI requirements if it stores these informations.

You are correct. The phone does not store any customer info.

Also if someone tries to tamper with it, it will need to be rest and no one can get the merchant ID unless the merchant supplies it to them.

Good Luck and please accept the answer

if you are asking if you can do this on your VX510, the answer is you can not check prior activity for any credit card on a credit card machine, that would require contacting the bank that issued the credit card. if it is your card they will provide information, if not your card, you will need owner of card to call.

VeriFone vx 610 needs to be "refreshed"

i presume UNREGISTER command is the RELEASE. read the last page of the manual. the device needs to be re-registered. http://paperrollsplus.com/media/wysiwyg/PDFs/Verifone_VX610_User_Manual.pdf possibly they might need to hit the unregister again to get the next step messages which you would have seen and ignored as it rebooted. cant you ask someone else you know who uses one?

Have you triple-checked for a possible device on it that shouldn't belong? They are often disguised as if they are part of the reader. Malicious intruders are quick and smart on how they install them in front of multiple people. This is a possible reason why there's an issue. These disguised device attachments record credit card numbers and pin numbers. There are videos of how malicious intruders on how they install them (check out YouTube). I read a news article about someone installing such a device at the DMV.
