Question about KitchenAid KHWS01PMT Front Load Washer

2 Answers

We cannot seem to get the mold smell out of our washers. We have two Kitchenaid front loaders. All along we've used Affresh and have periodically wiped out the rubber flaps and it's not helping. We need help with this problem. The smell is horrible not to mention extremely unhealthy! The washers are 4 years old.

Wouldn't I need a plumber for this or do I need a KitchenAid tech? Or can I really do this myself?

If you have used affresh and still have the problem there is a way to clean it. This will take multiple attempts.

First off use a product like Mr. Muscle mold and mildew remover and spray it everywhere you suspect mold inside the machine. Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes and then select a rinse or fill and drain. You MUST make sure this is completly out of the machine before doing the next step as any residual mold and mildew remover will cause a chemical reaction and heating in the next steps.

First soap wash

Use 1/2 cup of a non-bleach (if possible) dishwashing powder and a cup of bleach straight into the wash tub and then a hot wash.

Do a bucket test outside FIRST with this combination. 2 cups water. 1/2 table spoon powered dishwashing soap 1 table spoon bleach and mix.... MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT GET HOT. Not heating... your ready to proceed.

2nd wash 2 - 3 cups vinegar no soaps or beaches.

3rd cycle
Squeeze a lemon so that you have the juice only and dump it into the machine and then add 1/2 cup dishwashing powder.

After all of this the first actual clothing wash you do, make sure it is something like cleaning rags.

Next wash dark clothing... then back to normal washing.

Hopefully your using HE detergents vs normal laundry soaps. Normal laundry soaps will cause the symptom your describing.

I know this seems like a lot of work but on a musty machine it takes a lot of work.

For routine cleaning maintenance continue to use affresh. The 1/2 cup dishwashing powder and 1 cup bleach routine you can do every 90 days.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

There are many --- many other users facing this same problem of mold smell coming out of their washing machine. This smell comes in all types of and all brands of washing machines. It starts coming after 3 to 4 years. For this the drum needs to be taken out of the machine.Take the drum out of this 4 year old machine and make apart the drum unit completely. You will find/see the worst mold in the rubber boot/bladder that attaches to the outer plastic drum you don't see and the pump. Water apparently sits in there and mold starts. In some cases clothes in water comes into contact with MOLD and the smell also transfer in the clothes too. Also the mold all around the plastic drum that is outside the stainless drum you see. The mold on the back side of the stainless drum and in the plastic tubing leading from the detergent/bleach/softner fill area as well. Clean that all mold from all this areas ,and then refit all parts and run 3-4 empty cycles without clothes.Let the water fill and drain. Then for future help.make sure you pour some bleach into the drum when you are done with laundry for a while just so it won't be able to start forming again. --------- For more better cleaning.clean all hoses.lint trap, the drain pimp, the drain hoses the door panel etc etc. This are the places where water gets collected and sits there and this dirty, smell gets starting. -----------

Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation

Gasket seems to have pulled away from "drum" side;

Front loaders are known for building up mold and the smell.
It's caused by using liquid detergent which is made from animal fat. Use powder. And use the minimum amount.
It's caused by using fabric softener. Dilute it 50/50 with water.
It's caused by the water remaining in the tub between washes. Leave the door open to allow it to dry. .
Pull the rubber door seal back and clean the mold off .
Affresh is recommended by some manufacturers. You run it through a wash cycle with it.

How do I clean the mold smell from a front load neptune HE washer

some people use vinegar and water and run a hot wash with the unit empty i have found that when cleaning out any smell in a washer whether it be stagnant water smells or mold the one thing that works the best is a product they sell at home depot called AFFRESH it comes in two types one for the front load washer and another for dishwashers simply just add one tablet to your hottest wash without any clothes for heavy mold sometimes il run it twice with two tablets separately it sells for about 8.99 per package and is a life saver of all front loaders if you have any further questions message me back and please remember to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation this way I can keep helping people who have similar situations with there appliances Thanks again Rick

I have a front loader and hated the machine for the very same reasons. A one shot fix does not exist but rather requires ongoing treatment (they don't tell you that when you buy the washer though).

Star by getting rid of the existing smell. There are products designed specifically for this problem. One such is "Affresh" but there are others. Most are available at stores that sell the machines and like everything else, on the internet too. Use as directed and once the smell is gone, maintain by using the steps below.

Firstly - discard all non-HE detergents. I know the "regular" detergents are cheaper than the HE counterparts, but these machines are designed for the low-suds types; the regular types leave a soapy residue because the machine doesn't use nearly as much water as your old top loader. So give them to your friends with top loaders instead of using them in your front loader.

Next, run a small load, with bleach and hot water only - no clothes as the last load for the day.

Thirdly, leave the door(s) open on the days not used. This includes any top door for detergents / softeners along with the main front door of the machine between washes. It need not be left wide open - but open enough to allow air in to help dry the interior.

Fourth, wipe down the interior after the last load of the day. Pay particular attention to the rubber seal between the drum and the door jamb of the machine.

Fifth, stop using fabric softener in the washer. Use a fabric softener dryer sheet instead. Limiting the products added to the washer to just bleach & HE detergents is best.

Sixth, use the washer cleaning product (Affresh etc.) as needed as a preventative step or to head off problems if / when they just begin to become noticeable.

If you follow all of these steps - the offending odors can be eliminated and prevented.

I hope this was very helpful and good luck!

SMELL IN WASHER MODEL #MAH5500BWW AND BLACK MOLD

If you are using a high efficiency front loader than you suffer from the same symptoms that these front loaders typically have. The infamous bad smell and mold.. This is quite common because the front loaders actually seal the wash tub area with a water proof gasket around the door and left closed, the leftover water that gasket will get musty and if left untreated, may develop mold. Home Depot sells AFFRESH tablets that you cycle thru the qwasher about once a month and that usually does the trick.. The less desirable method is to wipe the gasket area with a towel or equivalent and leave the washer door open or partially open to air dry. That's been my experience.. Hope that helps !
