Get another receiver! I had the same problem and had the power supply replaced $250 and after 3 months it started doing the same thing.  I just purchased a Pinoeer Elite VSX 90TXV.

The amp is blown. Unhook all speakers and try it again. If it still shuts down it will have to be repaired.

SOURCE: Yamaha rx-v456 av receiver, shut down with optica cable

Does it work without PS3 attached?
When receiver turns off, it is usually due to badly connected/configured speakers. Try powering on the receiver without speakers.

When I play it it works fine until I turn volume above 31 it cuts off. NOw one channel is out, regardless of source

You have a shorted speaker or speaker wire. Disconnect all speakers at the receiver and turn the unit back on, then turn up the volume. If it still cuts out, you need to have it serviced. If it stays on, re-connect one speaker at a time and test. If you get to a speaker that causes it to shut off, disconnect the wire at the speaker and test again, if it stays on, the wire is ok and you need to meter the speaker for resistance. If your not sure how to do this, you can take the speaker to any home audio store and they will generally test it for free. If you need further help, post a comment and I can help you further.

My Yamaha RX-V661 shuts off at moderate volumes.

Try to disconnect speakers one by one and see if any of them causes the problem.

Yamaha RX-V1400 receiver powers off, in case it becomes louder

Hey, yeah that can be frustrating.

When you turn it up do you hear the relay or a clicking sound, then you turn it on and it comes back below the +2db?

Try unplugging All the speaker wires from the unit. Turn on the unit and listen for the click.
after the click, turn it up past the 2+ db mark and see if you hear it click or shut down. If it did not click off, then suspect a shorted crossover on one of your speakers.
2nd test is to plug in One speaker, and test it at high volume, it will not harm it. If it shuts off disconnect that speaker and try another. Only one at a time.
If it works at high volume, you need to isolate one of your speakers and i bet it has a shorted crossover that has been cooked. P.S. If one is bad, suspect they will fail at a later date.
If they all fail, use a friends speaker and try it before sending it to a repair shop.

P.S. i found one on ebay i think you can get for under $100 bucks in the box.

Receiver turns on and clicks off when volume is raised over 8 or 9 on the dial

I had the same problem with my Yamaha amp. It turned out to be a shorting speaker wire. When I resoldered the speaker wall outlet connection it worked fine!

Hi Seems like you have a shorted output channel, remove all your speaker connections and try again, if the problem persist, good chances are that you need to replace a couple of power transistors, let me know if you need more help, I've fixed some Yamaha amplifiers with this problem Good Luck Miguel
