Printing application has encountered an error

During setup of the Lexmark x6575, I received an error "Printing Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The setup then seems to complete without further issues. However, while I am able to print wirelessly (more than half the time) and print using a USB cord (all the time), when I try to launch the Lexmark Productivity Studio I get the "Printing Application has encountered a problem..." error again and the productivity studio shuts down after the error report was sent to Microsoft. In short, I can't ever launch the Lexmark Productivity Studio (and thus can't scan, etc).

I called Lexmark support and was informed that this is a Microsoft issue. I was not able to locate any patches released from Microsoft addressing this issue. Please help if you can!!!

    FYI: Forgot to add, I'm using Windows XP (SP3) on a Dell Latitude laptop.

    Have same problem. I believe it relates to the Lexmark software which should at least give an error message to indicate why it has failed.

    I have uninstalled all Lexmark drivers, cleaned the registry by removing anything referring to Lexmark, and reinstalled the printer software again with same result.

    Am at wits end as I cannot reinstall my laptop and am wasting a huge amount of time trying to find a solution.

    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    I am having the same problem - when I try to launch the Lexmark Productivity Studio I get the "Printing Application has encountered a problem...", I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer several times to no avail.

    Exactly the same problem on my Lexmark 4550, the imaging software comes up with this error message on my XP Laptop.

    It prints ok but cannot call up the scanner software at all.

    Lexmark have sent links but its only the current software so the same problem occurs.

    New printer / scanner, rubbish software I'm afraid to say.

    have the same problem with the Lexmark X6575,

    but i get no error message as such just a beep and the mouse icon is always busy so i cannot click on anything in the studio software.



    I can print but not scan,

    im using MS Live OneCare as my anti virus so uninstalled the lexmark software then reinstalled it while my onecare was disabled - still the same result

    I have same message "Printing application has encountered an error and must close" when I try to open Lexmark Productivity Studio. I have the x5495 all-in-one and am running on XP home. Tried both "best fixes" and neither served me. Does anyone have problems with this running on Vista?

    I'm using an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC and I've tried the solutions listed here and I keep getting the error. This is so frustrating ! This is a brand new printer, there has to be some way for Productivity Studio to work, isn't there? I have Windows XP Media Center Edition.

    "Printing application has encountered a problem and needs to close" is the error which pops up as asoon as I have connected and used my Lexmark printer. I have to disconnect the USB cord for the computer (windows XP) and hit the close button generally about seven times before the error message disappears. What to do?

    I am experiencing the same issue with the installation of the software, on one pc, but works for my laptop. This is the latest Lexmark PC - X7675.

    I downloaded the drivers from Lexmark and they installed fine and I can print. But once I start trying to load the Productivity Studio, it fails. Lexmark's customer service is worthless in helping.

    I get the same error message with the Lexmark X6650. This is the second printer I have tried to get through this problem with (X6650). Sent several hours on phone with Lexmark support, which was a waste of time.

    Tried this but it didn't help me with the x5495 as there was no such file. Spent a couple hours on the phone with Lexmark to no avail. Am actually considering putting the whole printer in the trast. It has caused me nothing but stress and problems and still can't open their software so cannot scan and the error messages are prolific.

I had the same problem and Lexmark was no help.
Go to Add and Remove Programs and click on Microsoft.net Framework 2.0 svce pack 2 and click support. Click on update and it will send you to the page for :
3.5 Service Pack 1 Download and restart computer. Go to Start Menu and uninstall Lexmark Printer and reinstall the program from the Lexmark Website (my cd was corrupt according to Lexmark.)
This will solve your problem.

I think I may have solved your problem .. it definately solved mine. If you look in C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Lexmark Productivity Studio .. you'll see an xml file called LXDDPDS.XML .... this file is autogenerated by the productivity suite. I decided since I was getting that error to try this.

I cut and pasted that file out of that folder to my desktop .. then I started the Lexmark Imaging Studio and IT WORKED!!

The file was regenerated and the program started with no fuss .. hope this helps.

p.s. - <user> is the current username you're logged in to on your machine if you didn't catch it .. ;)

    By the way, the Application Data folder is a hidden folder under C:\Documents and Settings\ .. where username is the name of the current user logged in.

I had the same problem, I had tried uninstalling the software and reinstalling, I even tried downloading the software from the lexmark site (just click on drivers and downloads and type in your printer model and your operating system e.g. windows sp2) and using this instead of my disc but nothing worked so in the end I went to add remove programmes and completely removed the update to sp 3.5 from my computer and restarted my computer then I removed the lexmark software for model x6570. Restared the computer again then reinstalled the software that I downloaded from the lexmark site and yipee it works.

Had same problem on my HP running windows XP. I tried uninstalling the printer & software from my control panel then reinstalling it using the original disk that came with my printer. This didn't change anything. Here is worked for me:

Go to Lexmark website.

1. Once you are on the website select Find Drivers & Downloads on the left of the page.
2. Find your model. You can search by model number (Mine is the X5495) & select your model from the list that is generated automatically once you begin typing in the box.
3. Select your operating system.
4. The driver download will appear near bottom of the next page.
5. Select it and follow the prompts. You may have to look at the top of your page & check to make sure windows is not blocking your download. If it is just it will seem that nothing is happening. Windows gives you a notification, click on the information box & allow the download. I decided to just have another copy of the driver & associated software put on my computer. They do give the option to "Update" but since I didn't select this option I don't know if it will "Fix" the problem.
Worked great! Yay!

Best solution I have heard so far is to buy a Canon ink jet printer. At least you can change individual colour cartridges. Further problems exist with the X6570. Lexmark are in the process of sending me my second replacement printer (yes, whole printers) and have already sent me one set of replacement black cartridges. Any problems just send a new printer.

I think they have problems with this one?

I have exactly the same problem with a X6570 printer. Nice printer but the software is rubbish.

    I solved my problem and the solution might work for you too. I am running Windows XP SP3. After a lot of experimenting with different approaches, I disabled my Norton antivirus software and then installed the Lexmark Productivity Studio software again from the CD. I was then able to start the Productivity Studio and use the application to scan, print and fax on the X6570 printer. Then I enabled my Norton antivirus again and tested again: everything worked fine. I have now installed the software on three different machines (ThinkCentre desktop, ThinkPad laptop and HP Pavilion desktop) with consistent success. Please note that you do not to uninstall the antivirus software, just disable it for the 15 minutes you need to install and test Productivity Studio.

    It's a real pity that Lexmark cannot provide better documentation to help users install their software, also that the software does not give meaningful error messages.

After scan, whatever save function is used the error message "printing application has stopped working" appears with the only option Close Application.


Try to re-install the Lexmark X4650 driver. Visit the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/iofMNC. Select your operating system, download the driver and execute the file.

Lexmark Z645 can print locally, but will not print off of citrix


Lexmark X and Z series printers do not function in a Citrix environment, see page 4 on the following document.

I have lexmark X6575, receiving message, unable to load JIT compiler mscorjit.dll file may be missing, please re run setup. I have unistalled/reinstalled , message remains.


I was able to fix the problem with my lexmark X6575, activating the printer from the desktop icon and to use the fax, utilizing the utility tools provided by your expert. Lexmark could not provide the solution, and I am still waiting for them to tell me what the proiblem was. Your expert found the solution very fast. Thank You, I will call you again for help when I require in future.

Uninstalling Lexmark Fax Solutions

1. Go to Start, Programs (Win XP: All Programs), Lexmark Fax Solutions.
2. Click on Uninstall Lexmark Fax Solutions. The Installation Shield Wizard screen appears, displaying a progress bar.
3. In response to Do you want to completely remove the selected application and all of its features?, click OK to confirm the uninstallation. A number of screens will appear in succession.
4. In response to Setup has encountered application settings and data files. Do you want to remove these files and settings from your computer?, click Yes.
5. Click Finish to complete the operation.
