Hello,

The problem could be overheating or a faulty motherboard. A professional laptop repairer will have testing tools and programs that he can use to test the laptop and see if the mainboard is faulty.

For example PC CHECK is a good tool for professional use, but it is not ideal for home user. it will cost you too much.
http://www.eurosoft-uk.com/pccheck.html

Free tools are also available, for example memtest http://www.memtest.org/

but this program only tests the ram memory. If errors come up, then you have faulty ram memory, which is cheap to replace. But if errors remains after replacing with new modules the main board is faulty most likely.

If no errors come up then the memory is OK. The problem can be the video adapter / card in the motherboard.

you can run this simple test in windows.http://freestone-group.com/video-card-stability-test.htm
If your computer crashes or freezes when you run this, it is possibly faulty video adapter on the motherboard- in this case the whole motherboard has to be replaced as the video card is build into the board and can not be replaced.

The video card test is not very good, if your computer just freezes up in any case, it won't provide any new information.

Next possible problem is the CPU, PC CHECK program has good test for it, but again it costs too much for a home user to purchase.

You can try free boot cd, http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/index.html Ultimate boot cd, that has cpu stress test programs.

if the computer freezes during memory or cpu testing, then most likely the motherboard or the cpu is faulty. If you are unable to test the memory, the computer freezes during test, then please take the memory to a professional that can test the memory on another computer.

If this does it with fresh batteries and optical light is clean, also test on a solid colored surface before trying another mouse to see if it is the mouse or system board. Did this start with new download of another web browser? Software install/update? If mouse is older, need to remove ball and clean 3 wheels.

Inspiron 531s will not boot up, keeps beeping, saying it is in power save mode. How do I fix the problem

System Beep Codes The Inspiron™ 531 / 531s system can emit a series of beeps during start-up if the display cannot show errors or problems. These series of beeps, called beep codes, identify various problems. One possible beep code consists of repetitive three short beeps. This beep code indicates the computer encountered a possible system board failure.
The series of beeps has a 3-second delay before it repeats. The series and delays continually loop until you press the power button.
Code Description Suggested Remedy 1 BIOS ROM checksum in progress or failure System board failure; covers BIOS corruption or ROM error 2 No memory modules detected
  1. If you have two or more memory modules installed, remove the modules, reinstall one module, and then restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error.
  2. If available, install a good memory module of the same type into the computer.
  3. If the problem persists, contact Dell.
3 Chipset error (North and Southbridge chipset, DMA/IMR/Timer Error for Intel® platform); chipset error System board failure. Power LED is blinking amber. Time-Of-Day Clock test failure Gate A20 failure Super I/O chip failure Keyboard controller test failure 4 RAM read/write failure
  1. Ensure no special memory module/memory connector placement requirements exist.
  2. Verify the memory modules you are installing are compatible with the computer.
  3. If the problem persists, contact Dell.
5 Real time clock failure. Possible battery failure or system board failure.
  1. Replace the battery.

I replaced my HD on Dell inspiron 9300 and it won't recognize the new drive. The new drive was also purchased from Dell and was one that was compatible with the computer. It's saying there's no bootable HD...

It probably has found your new HD, you need watch the screen as you attempt to boot. Failing that enter the bios (usually " hit DEL to enter setup" appears on the screen. Don't change anything but just check to see if the bios has detected a hard drive.

Now .......... the reason why it won't boot is because you have to re-install windows onto the hard drive.

When I start my Inspiron 9300 the Dell symbol appears andI get a dark scree with a short line near the top left of the screen. Help I tried removing the battery and restarting.

This is the dos screen before start up. Normally your motherboard and cpu go through a quick self test and then your hard drive and os start up. What is happening with yours is it is not passing its self test. What you should do is remove and re-seat the memory cards and hard drive in your computer and then try and start it up. If this does not work it means either *********** board or your cpu have failed.

My acer netbbook wont come on the power light is litt

Mother board or memory module can be the problem. First remove the cmos battery and switch on, if its ok then reinstall the cmos battery and see.check with other memory module or if you have 2 modules one at a time. If problem persists, try heating the motherboard display chipset with a blower, if you are a hardware technician. This should be done by only a professional as u can damage the motherboard and other parts. Last resort is replace mother board.

Do you still have the Dell Resource CD? If so, run the 32-bit diagnostic tests by inserting the Resource CD or Drivers and Utilities disk and press F12 when you start the computer (as soon as you see the DELL logo). Then boot from the CD-ROM. Run the Express Test. Check for error messages. Go to support.dell.com and search for that error message or codes.
