Question about Xantrex Technology Heart Freedom 20 12 Inverter

Open Question

On my Lakeview 14'x58' houseboat, I have a 12V 130 Amp Freedom Marine 25 (1999) providing charging/inverting to a bank of eight 12V deep cycle marine batteries with a total combined AH of ~ 1200, which provides ~ 10 hours of power for the refrigerator and other AC convenience loads. Everything was working fine until this weekend, but now the system will not charge the batteries from either the generator or shore power. The "<10" DC amp indication is lighted on the Heart Interface panel, but will not go higher. I have checked the inline fuse to the battery bank and it reads 2 ohms, so it is not blown. Any ideas or suggestions?

    It is likely a blown fuse inside the unit, but some other component may have failed first. Check the transformer on the AC sensing circuit card for evidence of arcing or charring. It should read ~ 130 ohms across its coil. If not, that is likely your problem.

    The problem was a blown relay on the AC sensing card. The card was ~ $300 at a Xantrex authorized service center plus ~ $100 labor and tax. The unit was a bear to uninstall and lug in for service, but if you have reasonable wiring skills, ultimately cheaper than a "house call".

Batteries could be too low, or unit could think batteries are too low because it is not set up for your battery configuration. (voltage, amperage, deep cycle, wet, gel, agm etc.)

I am not sure how you set up that model but the manual should explain it. If you don't have one you can get it online from xantrex.

STOP!!! Immediately have the shore power breakers checked by assuring both output legs have EQUAL output. If not they can either burn out the inverter solid states components or the main coach A/C, Generator transfer switch. You can usually check this with a multimeter but the shore power park managers usually have maintenance personnel to check and replace bad pedestal breakers. Does this help?

Yes, *if* you can find an exact replacement and get someone to sell it to you. In order to protect their propriety designs, Xantrex only provides OEM replacement parts to its factory authorized service network, but you might find one of them locally who would be willing to sell you the part, especially if the unit is on a boat (a Marine Freedom 25?), and can't be brought to them.

How do you verify that the unit is charging the batteries? Freedom 20 Inverter charger


The really only way one can tell if batteries are being charged is assure them are topped off then trickle charge them with external charger overnight and then check the voltage is 13-14.5 VDC. If not check that battery life is not expired and exchange them if it is. ALSO... one can always extend the life of batteries (deep-cycle) by charging them with a large professional automotive unit in the high power START position over night. WARNING: Assure the caps are loose as you "boil away" the plate corrosion over night due to the very explosive H2 gas generated. No smoking!!

Yes, just be sure connections are heavy enough wire, and obviously the inverter uses 12 vdc input. Hook jumper wires positive to positive, negative to negative, on all 12 volt batteries. Deep cycle batteries will work better than car batteries. Just remember, when re-charging them, that they last longer when charged slowly, so don't use a high amp setting on charger and to monitor them closely, and do it in a well ventilated area, away from any ignition sources.

I have the same problem with my Freedom Marine 25. Assuming it worked previously and you have checked all the obvious things (generator/shore power breaker contacts, etc.), the Xantrex tech says it is likely a small 1/4 amp slow blow fuse on the AC sensing card inside the box, but that the AC transformer may have shorted to cause the fuse to blow. The internal arrangement may be different but remove the cover screws and locate the 2"x2" transformer on the AC sensing card for signs of arcing or charring. If you have a meter, check the transformer coils and if it reads significantly less than ~ 130 ohms, that is likely your problem, which will require taking the unit to an Xantrex authorized service center, since Xantrex does not provide parts or schematics to the general public.

Our Inverter works but the battery charger seems to trip out everytime we try to charge the batteries.


There is no way to guess what the problem is, we technicians use a multimeter to look at the electrical circuit values to determine the problem. The charging circuit could be bad, or the batteries could be shorted.
