Hard Drive Problem

The computer won't boot doesn't recognize the hard drive. I'm not sure if the problem is that the hard drive is dead? or the mother board is shot?

Dell Inspiron 600m: No Boot Device. I'm a computer

Have you tried resetting the BIOS defaults? In doing so, it will force IDE re-detection and often resolve vague boot issues.

Hi my acer is asking for boot device

hi there,
please make sure that there is no USB flashdrive connected on your computer and make sure that there is no cd in the drive.
It's saying that it cannot find a bootable device because the drive it's trying to boot from doesn't have any bootable file.
If there is no cd in the drive and no USB flashdrive is connected chances are that your operating system installed in the hard drive was corrupted and you may have to do a reinstallation.
Hope this helps!

Win XP doesn't "see" hard drive, can't install

If it is in a loop, and does not recognize the hard drive, the hard drive may have some corruption or failed sectors on it, or dead all together. To test if its dead, hit either ESC, F2 or F12 on your keyboard on the vaio screen, should launch the BIOS where you can see what storage devices it detects. If there is no hard drive it is either dead or lost connection. If it does show up there you can test for sector corruption by downloading HDD regenerator (google search) and running the scan. It will give a drive map if there is any sector damage (not mechanical failure) Any questions, let me know.

Windows cannot read the hard disk..it says critical error.then advise me to purchase the advance module.the screen went blank, all the programs are gone.

First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If this does not work then reboot and go to theBIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn'tdetect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Next - to determine if thehard drive is faulty, remove the hard drive and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer cannot see itas an external hard drive and you cannot open the various folders and files, this confirms the hard drive is faulty. Then hard drive needs to bereplaces in the laptop and Windows installed and the laptop's device driversand your programs etc to get a functioning laptop again.

I recover the operating system with hp recovery system, but once completed and restart the netbook, my hp mini 2140 never managed to come in and just boot windows back and forth. then I did the hard disk...

Go into the BIOS by pressing f10 when powering on the laptop.

Go to System Configuration and choose Device Configuration

Scroll down to SATA Native Mode and disable.

Press f10 to save configuration. The computer should reboot and press f9 to select boot device.

See if the 160GB hdd is now showing as an option. If it is then you are in luck.

p.s: You may need to update the BIOS to the latest if it still does not show up for you.

My system refuses to boot

You could have a faulty hard drive, reseat the hard drive, if it still doesn't work take it out and connect it into a USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port, if this computer sees the hard drive and see the contents of the external drive the the hard drive is OK then you could have a faulty disk controller or Windows needs to be reinstalled again.
If you cannot see the hard drive then it is dead and you need a new one.

Operating system not found

Unfortunately the mot common reason for 'operating system not found' is a failed or corrupted hard drive. You need to go into your BIOS menu and see if your hard drive is recognized by the computer. When booting up push F1 and enter the BIOS menu. Go to the menu item for boot up or start up and see if your hard drive is recognized. If your hard drive is recognised then it may be salvageable by booting from a recovery disk or reinstalling windows from a CD. If the drive is not recognised in the BIOS, you have a dead hard drive or maybe just a bad connection. More help can be found on the Lenovo website site and the Forum at that site.
