Question about Canon PowerShot A490 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Brand new (one hour old) Canon Powershot A490 looks like it has a software bug. All the buttons used to work but now no button responds except fpr the left button when one of the two bottom buttons (camera and menu) is pressed. Pressing one of the latter then pressing the left button constantly cycles through the menus.

Obviously, you have a defective camera. Don't try to fix it or you may void the warranty....send it back.

Thank you for your reply. I rang Canon and that's what they said to do too. I was hoping there might be a combination of buttons to reset the camera but they said it can only be done from the menu. That's not very useful when the software has crashed and I can't get to the menu item. I'll bear that in mind when I'm doing my own embedded programming.

I did think of using the CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit) but it hasn't been ported to the A490 yet and their idea of resetting the camera just seems to be turning it off and back on. I already tried that, of course, as well as removing the AAs and the clock battery too in case it powered some sort of configuration memory.

I returned it to the shop today and got my money back.

Having gone over a month without a response to my query, I assume my suggestion to use a card reader eliminated the need for a driver.

My Canon PowerShot A490 has an error "memory card locked" do I fix that, please?

Turn off the camera and take off the memory card. There is a small tab on the upper right side of the card. Just adjust that tab upwards to unlock it. Then put it back and try again.

Hope this helps. Thank you for using FIxYa.

I need to import pictures from my laptop to my canon powershot a490 but i cant seem to? help please?!

Be sure that there is at least one picture (just take one) on the memory card. This ensures the canon folder structure is in place. Put your memory card in a card reader. Copy the files from the laptop to the memory card.

For canon, you will see subfolder on the memory card DCIM and under that another folder, something like 136CANON (the 136 could be any number). Put the pictures in that one and you should be able to see them on the canon powershot a490

Just purchased a PowerShot A490, loaded software etc. but when I try to upload pics to my computer it says it can not detect camera. My older model, PowerShot A570 can be detected with the new software...

Consider NOT using the USB connection.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.
