Question about Xerox Phaser 8500/DN Printer

Xerox Phaser 8500

Xerox recently had me update the firmware on our printer here in the office and now it won't even boot. They walked me through it over the phone, and it said that the transfer had completed and start to reboot...the tech then got off the phone and whenever I looked at the printer it was looping the power-cycle, runs through the tests and completes, then say's initializing and restarts, no menu's or logos. It was flashed via network
Here's what I've done:

-reseated ram
-put one stick at a time in
-tried holding the '?' and 'back' button down during startup
-unplugged all cabling and let it sit for a bit
-started w/o the ethernet plugged in
-called Xerox, they said it would need a service call
-talk to 2 other techs at different repair shops, they said it sounded like maybe the 'electronic control module' needs to be replaced
-called xerox back and am trying to get them to at least send me this part
-we have no service agreement with them though, but the printer is a little less than a year old
-out IT guy here tried to reset the jumpers (didn't work, but it did cause it to not even try to boot for a bit, but now its back to looping).

Is there a way to get into diagnostic mode so we can access and try to re-flash?

If it's still going through the constant reboot, then there is a real potential that the main ICU PWB board got fried during the firmware flash / update.

If the machine is still in it's warranty phase, Xerox should either send you the replacement board, or swap the machine entirely.

You've got some physical problem inside the printer.

See:

http://www.office.xerox.com/printers/color-printers/phaser-8500-8550/sprt-enca.html

If your printer is networked, it can actually communicate with our support knowledge base directly, and troubleshoot itself.

PDF documents do not print completely on my Xerox Phaser 8500

I am having the same problem. Sometimes my Xerox Phaser 8500 prints a PDF or web page fine, and other times I get pages and pages of what looks like PostScript code. I thought I had installed the most recent printer drivers, We are using primarily Macs with OS 10.4 or 10.5. One recent change is that we connected the printer to an Airport Express using a USB cable, which is sweet when it works correctly....any ideas???

Xerox 8500 excessive ink use

Hi,

One of the reasons this could be happening is because you are using non-xerox ink so your print head needs to clean it out much more often. Be careful using other ink as this can destroy the machines printhead which is more expensive then the machine itself to replace. What you could try is installing the new printhead firmware, it might help! Follow the link below and good luck!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Do you have a maintenance agreement? If you do call them back and tell them to get there asap.
Sounds very much like the firmware is corrupted. If you cant get to diagnostics, here is what you can try.
On the back of the machine open the panel to access the memory, remove the memory and power the machine up with the memory removed. Let it fault out, then replace the memory and start it again. See if that works.
Then remove and reseat the main board by turning the orangish knobs and sliding the board out and back in.
It really sounds like the upload corrupted and Xerox needs to resolve this for you.
They will try and say it's not their fault, but if they directed you to do the upgrade, they are at fault and should fix it for you.
Unless, and I very much doubt the old software is on their site, no you cant go back to the old firmware, you may try reloading it and see if it loads correctly.

The front panel shows nothing

When our control panel went blank last month, Xerox did not offer a free replacement because our printer was out of warranty. Consequently, we ordered one from SparePartsWarehouse.com at the best price we could find - $104.87 plus shipping. The part number for our 8550dp is 848K06551, but these are the compatible part numbers for the "Xerox 8500 Control Panel & Bezel": Compatible Part Numbers: 848K06551, 101E28730, 101E28731, 802K93650, 802K93651, 848K06550, 848K06552. It is easy to replace, instructions are on the Xerox website at http://www.office.xerox.com/printers/color-printers/phaser-8500-8550/sprt-enus.html
Hope this info helps someone, and thank you FixYa for this forum.
