Motor for water removal does not shut off when in wash and spin cycle.

It is Model MAV6257AWW. It sounds like the pump keeps running (makes a lot of noise) but the water does stay in the tub during wash cycle.

  • jacobson_bil Sep 27, 2010

Solution was spot on. Detailed solution helped me replace the pump assembly and even gave me the part #. Found the part locally and it saved me quite a bit of time trying to figure it out.
Thank you, much worth the $12.00.

It looks like you are referring to a machine with model number other than the model number (MAV600) where you posted your problem because this model does not have a separate motor for water removal (pump motor). The drain pump does not have a pump motor and the pump is also driven by the drive motor . A single belt is used to drive both the drive pulley and the pump pulley.

Explicitly indicate the complete and exact model number of the dryer for specific troubleshooting advice. You don't have to accept or reject and rate this post to add information or post comments and follow-up questions. But accepting a solution will not stop you from communicating with an expert. You may continue communicating with the expert as long as you need assistance regarding the issue stated herein.

It sounds like like the pump impeller is broken or restricted and it is where the noise coming from. It seems to run forever because with the impeller broken or restricted, water is not pumped out as manifested by the water staying in the tub and the pressure switch cannot reset to the empty position for the drive motor to stop and hence and hence the pump. Both the pump and the drive pulley are driven at the same time by the drive motor.

Disconnect power then remove the front panel to access and remove or replace the pump. Insert a putty knife blade or any thin-bladed tool between the front panel and the top cover at about three inches from each corner. Press the blade against the wire clips one at a time while lifting the top cover to disengage them then lift the top cover up to a stationary position. Push the top cover down into the front panel to reengage the clips when reinstalling.

Remove the screws securing the front panel to the upper front corner braces of the cabinet. Tilt the front panel top away from the cabinet then lift to disengage the bottom from the base clips. Simply reverse these procedures when reinstalling the front panel.

The pump is located on the right front corner of the machine base. Detach the pump inlet and outlet hoses then remove the three screws mounting the pump to the machine base. Slide the pump to the rear to disengage the belt from the pump pulley and remove the pump.

Check the pump pulley and clear it for debris that might block water to be pumped out. The pump assembly can be disassembled by removing the four screws securing the pump housing to the pump base and lift off the housing. The pump impeller can be taken off by removing the securing screw and prying it off the spline. Replace the pump if the impeller is broken or if the noise is persistent. Place one hand through the pump opening and lift the belt. Set the pump pulley into the opening then place the belt on. Install the pump mounting screws while holding tension on the belt to keep it on the pulley. The pump assembly is part number 35-6780.

Maytag Atlantis Model 8551AWW washing machine...fills up with water...then starts the agitation cycle and will agitate for about 1 minute...then shuts off...after about five minutes the agitation cycle...

1
Unplug the washing machine, and turn off the water supply to the machine. If necessary, remove the water hoses from the back of the washing machine because they may be in the way of the access panel.
2
Check that the agitator is seated correctly by opening the lid of the washing machine. If it's loose, pop off the top of the agitator--if there is one--and tighten the bolt that holds the agitator in place. Or, in some models, simply pull straight up and then reseat the agitator.
3
Remove the access panel located in the back of the washing machine by unscrewing the screws holding it in place. This allows access to the drive motor.
4
Press on the drive belt that works the agitator. If the belt moves more than 3/4 inch, tighten the belt to fix the spinner problem. If the belt is worn or cracked, replace the belt.
5
Replace the drive motor, if tightening or replacing the drive belt doesn't fix the agitator. Purchase a new drive motor at a wholesale retailer. Disconnect wiring, remove screws holding motor in place and insert new motor. Screw into place, and connect wiring.
6
Check for any black substance leaking under the washing machine. This might indicate a clutch problem, if the washing machine spinner is not working. Contact a professional repairman to replace the clutch.

Shutting down on rinse cycle

Hi this could means that you may need to replace the washing machine bearings. Once the bearings are bad, the motor overheats and it will automatically shut down after the first rinse.
