Question about Frigidaire PLHS269ZC Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Almost once a day now there is water on the floor under the fridge. I'm sure it is a result of the ice maker refilling but I don't know how to fix it. It's like the fill valve stays open to long or something of that nature.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly
Actually I want you to look in the bottom of the freezer compartment at the evaporator drain area. Look for standing water OR signs of ice in the very back of the freezer but on the bottom usually center of the rear access area. If you see standing water there or slabs of ice... the evaporator drain is clogged and will need to be cleared by a manual defrosting with a fan for about 2 hours. (Messy)
Every automatic defrost cycle the process of defrosting via an electrified heater makes water 2 to 3 times a day depending on the scheduled defrost cycle periods. It can be from 6 hour to 10 hour intervals. Once that water collects if the drain is clogged it will sheet in the bottom of the freezer because it can not drain into the catch tray under the back of the unit once the unit goes back to normal cooling.

Now as for the ice-maker. Here is a way to make sure or not it actually is the a problem with the ice maker water valve.
( I C E M A K E R Switched O F F )
On the back of the unit there is a plastic water line that goes to the rubber through the cabinet fill tube. Squeeze the clamp and remove the plastic hose. Place that hose in a bucket for at least 12 hours. At the end of 12 hours check the bucket for any significant signs of water. If there is water in the bucket with ice maker OFF then the ice maker water valve is bypassing water and will have to be replaced.

Your water valve is item 55 this link:

Note there is a substitude part number. It is OK the alternate part number will work just fine.

I just opened up the back of my Frigidaire Side by Side counter depth to find the drain hose was bent and collapsed coming right out of the bottom of the freezer and the pan was dry as a bone. It doesn't look like my drain hose has ever drained a drop of water. The freezer bottom is full of ice And the rust and chipping paint under the bottom of the freezer door along with the mysterious puddles of water every morning means the drain system definetely never worked. Frigidaire should be responsible for this. This, along with the ice maker rebuild I had to do,... after ice was spilling all through the fridge. I actually had warrantty left on that one and called customer support in India to find out I could make the repair myself. Yep I had to do it. Frigidaire you failed.

I can understand your frustration. My thoughts on the drain tube being folded over. This was most likely caused by the installer when they moved the unit into your home.

Fridge leaking intermittently from the bottom

Sounds like your gasket may be going out. Consider replacing the gasket on the doors. Look for signs like small lines of frozen water that lead to the door or unexplainable excess ice in the bottom of the freezer.
I would also check for excess water in the condensation catcher tray, which may very well be located in the same spot under the ice maker. Depending on where you live (southeast, coastal, etc...) can have a strong contributing factor of having excess condensation, which will cause the tray to overflow.

Water leaks under viking professional and there is about a 1/4 inch build up of ice on floor of freezer(which is on the bottom) on the floor of the pull ot freezer

Your drain is plugged. Basically the freezer goes into defrost and melts frost off the condenser coils. A big piece most likely fell off and freezer came out of defrost before it coulld melt and drain out completely. To fix you have 2 options. Have towels
#1- move contents of fridge and freezer to a backup fridge. Leave unpluged with doors slightly opened for 24 to 48 hrs. Use towels to cleanup any water. Plug back in wait 2 hrs to make sure temp gets back down before putting contents back in fridge.
#2- Remove contents from fridge and put in ice chest. Have towels ready. Remove ice maker ( if there is one) usually two screws on top hard to see and one on bottom. Disconnect the quick connect for the ice maker. Remove screw on back wall. Be careful when removing air vent on back wall. Its plastic and can break. Remove back panel. Look on the silver plate under coils and you will see ice and where the drain is. Remove ice than pour hot hot water down drain until it flows freely into drain pan under fridge by compressor. It may look like there is not ice make sure othyerwise you will be doing this all over again in a few days. Once water flows freely put everything back together wait about 2 hrs for freezer temp to get cold enough and than you can put contents back in freezer. If you have any question or need help please feel free to comment me back.

Ice maker has ice motor doen't dump the ice

Your ice-maker may need to be "hard-reset". To do this, perform a manual-defrost by emptying out the freezer (and fridge) and shutting all power off to your unit for several hours (at least half a day unless you can be sure the temp in the freezer has fully reached ambient. Next, with freezer empty, restore power, make sure the "ice" setting is set to off, then set the forced power-freeze mode (you can refill the fridge, but leave the freezer empty for now. When the power-freeze completes (at least 2.5 hours) you can refill the freezer, set the "ice" mode to block/crushed (IE something other than off) and then hit the "black reset button" to restart the ice-maker. IF it still will not dump the cubes then the ice sensor/control board may have failed.

Water dripping from freezer into refrigerator area and frozen water in freezer

The defrost cycle is melting ice that will not go down the drain tube in the rear of the freezer. This can be a clogged tube due to debris, organic growths or ice blocking flow. What doesn't end up dripping into the fridge ends up freezing in the freezer compartment. Make sure the fridge is level or tilted back slightly.

Unplug the fridge from power. Remove the contents of the freezer and remove the ice maker, back wall plate and floor plate in the freezer section. Remove ice build up on the floor and tray in the freezer by thawing and soaking up water. Flush hot water (use a turkey baster to get at it) at the opening of the drain hose that is connected to the tray to thaw any ice.. once flowing to the evapraor tray under the fridge, mix up 1/2 oz of bleach and 4 oz of water and pour down the tube to kill any bacteria.

Reassemble and restock the freezer. Monitor the temperature of the fresh food (34 deg) and freezer (0 deg) compartments. If you notice the temperatures start to climb, there may be a problem with the defrost timer, terminator, etc. and may require a pro's help.

Good luck!
