Question about Boating

Open Question

I have a Raytheon SL70 radar system in my boat that has worked perfectly for years. I think something is now wrong with the dome, there is no return image on the screen. Is it price effective to repair or replace the unit? Can the existing cable be used for a more modern unit, Raytheon brand or not. I want stand alone radar and any replacement brand would be fine. The cable would be difficult to replace in the boat. Thank you in advance for your help. Patrick Dwyer

SOURCE: Antenna not rotating

It sounds like voltage loss could be your issue. You need to find the "Y" cable under the dashboard and measure the voltage at the point where it connects to the main 12V supply. Keep the meter on and then spin up the radar. If there is a fuse (there should be) make sure you are measuring on the radar side of the fuse. If the voltage drops off as the radar slows, you have found your problem. If the voltage stays constant and the connections are sound at the terminations in the radar pedestal, I would recommend you send the pedestal in to Raymarine.

SOURCE: Hi, I have a Radar Screen. Furuno 1942 MK2 . What

A 1942 is a 6 kw radar a 1720 is either a 1.5 or 2.2 kw dome. The two will not work together. Besides the cabling is different. Also the radar cable on a 1942 is round where as the 1720 is square. The 1942 display should work fine on a 1943 navnet radar.

SOURCE: need outside plastic radar cover

Plastic cover as in the radome? If you still have the damaged dome the cheapest solution will be to repair it with a thin layer of fiberglass. All you have to ensure is that the fiberglass is pure and no metal shards get close during the repair.
Otherwise, give your local Radio Holland office a shout to find out if they might have a second hand dome, if not you will have to buy a new one.

SOURCE: Raymarine "DSM connection lost"

Has the DSM and the E120 software been upgraded to the latest software: 4.12 for the DSM and 5.52 for the E120?

Try this first. You can download the software off and burn each to a separate compact flash card.

I have seen many problems like you are experiencing solved with this simple change.

If this doesn't solve the problem, the DSM will have to go back to Raymarine for repair.

Raytheon R21XX/R41XX Radar home use or testing ? boat, ship radar

That model is meant for marine (boat) use. You can pre-test it anywhere as long as you are providing the proper power source. It's meant for 12vdc. If you have a marine battery, or a car battery handy, just power it up from that. You do not want to plug it in to household current, you would fry it in a matter of seconds. I would suggest hooking it up to the power 12v outlet in your car of truck to test it.

Hi Jim

Your VHF lives in a fairly harsh marine environment and you're correct in thinking "tuner cleaner" might be the answer. I believe that your volume control is simply dirty. I would suggest using silicone spray (WARNING- Use ONLY the safe for plastics type.) to clean it. I've had good success just removing the control knob and blasting the pot, working it back and forth. You MIGHT wish to do this with the power off however, unless you have a great set of earplugs.

You mentioned that you have a handheld VHFas well. Any chandlery will carry an adapter (about $10) to let you hook your portable to the big antenna should a problem with your marine VHF arise. We've had the occasion once to have to do this and we were glad we carry the handheld aboard at all times.

I got a raytheon sl70 pathfinder gps that wont get a fixed signal the antenna is wired right but there dosent seen to be power comeing out of the cord that leads to the antenna. what should i do ????? i...

If you're using a raystar 125 antenna, you will have to power the red wire + and the shield wire - separately. Sl70's don't provide power over seatalk. Also make sure your green and brown wires are properly connected. If it's a 120 just power the red and sheild(black) and leave off the all except the yellow that's your data. If you still have nothing may probably have a problem in the antenna itself.

I am not picking up objects on my screen until I am right on them. Tried tilting the radar dome down foward to see if this would work to no avail. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

depending on the type of boat you currently have it mounted on, you may be out of range. Also your radar may need tuning and make sure your rain and seaclutter is not too high. Make sure the rain clutter is off. If the radar is mounted on a sailboat and you're having this problem, it's most likely the height unless it worked before in which case it could either be the display or the radar components. Magnetrons which run the radar also have a life.

The top half of the dome blew off while towing boat. Any way to replace the top half with a used or new piece? Don't need to replace the whole dome.

As long as no damage was done to the enclosure from the lid blowing off, there is no reason that you can't simply put a dome on it. Try contacting furuno direct to see if the part is available. Make sure you know exactly what model radar you have before you call.

Furuno 1622 doesn't work, water coming out cable at screen!

yes the cable should be replaced if you are lucky, the unit is still OK (display) Try the new cable, draped across the boat before rigging. If fault exists with new cable, replace system, or find a new display on ebay
