Your timer is probably for incandescent bulbs only.

A commonrail diesel ford ranger won't start, but it crank

You would need to check the glow plug timer circuit and the fuel supply. Diesel glow plugs can wear out. Make sure the "Ready light" is working and that you hear the timer cycling. Usually the lights will dim as the power goes to the glow plugs.

The glow plug wire can be checked with a Voltmeter inserted on a wire from the Relay timer. The glow plugs are tested when they are removed from the engine. If you get this far, you can use battery cables to test them. They can melt. Ask for more details about proper procedure.

1991 f 350 wont stay running7.3 deisel new injecters new glow plugs new fuel filter have to put gas on a rag and cover intake starts but u put into gear and dies

Many things to check. Wonder if this work was done to alleviate problem or problem was from doing the work.

Putting gas fumes in a 21:1 compression cylinder is sure way to ruin engine.

2 possible problems are losing your diesel fuel draw from an air leak in the fuel lines and an inoperative glow plug timer.

When you change a fuel filter you lose the vacuum lock that is in the fuel lines. Some mechanics add fuel to the new filter to remove some of the air and promote fuel draw. The O rings on the injector lines are a special type which resists petroleum products. Using cheap O rings will cause problems.

Glow plug timer-there is a power Relay to the timer and the timer itself is a type of Relay. You should hear clicking noise and lights should dim as timer provides power to the glow plugs.

Other things to check would be the Vacuum pump as Diesels work differently than gas engines and require a pump to supply Vacuum. Covering the intake suggests engine needs a Vacuum draw.

Weak fuel pump. Too weak to pressurize or draw fuel. Can be measured with pressure gauges.

Really bad rings could also cause symptoms.

Would be interested knowing what proved to be wrong.

In the "off" mode there is power leakage as some of the LED Christmas lights are still on

1) Buy timer that is rated for inductive, and not just rated for tungsten or resistive.
Rating usually appears in each product manual except with cheap knock-off timers or older timers that might not show rating or have rating sticker on timer.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#outdoor

2) Digital timers work differently than mechanical timers.
Digital do not completely shut off the circuit, unless they are rated for inductive.
So inductive loads like CFL or LED will have slight glow.

3) ALWAYS plug outdoor timers into GFCI-protected outlet.
Unplug timer from wall when working with lights, and cords.
Stand on dry surface or plywood and never bare ground.
Plug timer directly into outlet, and do not use extension cord.

4) Don't use LED Christmas lights because they have no warmth and look cheap and un-inviting.

1987 Ford f-250 6.9 liter diesel. Glow plugs are good, Relay is new, glow plugs don't work... is there a glow plug relay controller or timer that can be replaced, and what is the part's proper name?

Check for fuses first. The Glowplug timer is the proper name for the part that responds to Temperature when starting your engine. When the engine is cold, of course it is on longer and can cycle making a click and intermittently dimming the lights on your truck. When the engine is warm, your gowplugs may not even fire as the engine is using compression alone to fire up.

Also, Ford did make a Severe Weather model that kept the glowplugs on longer. If you stay in Alaska or a climate with consistent subzero temperatures you may need it.

Intermittant heating. It will begin to glow....sometimes the flames shoot out for a short time....but then go out. Then, it will continue to glow red without flames igniting, then goes dim....couple minutes...

This is usually caused by faulty coils on the heat valve. they can be purchased seperate from the gas valve and are relatively easy to install..

Superswitch programmable wall light switch - when timer is in off position lights glow dim when using energy saving bulbs.

http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/consumer%20indoor%20timers/in-wall%20timers/ej351c.aspx

Manual say 'incandescent' light bulbs only.

What can I control with my EJ351C? The EJ351C timer is to be used with standard base incandescent light bulbs only! It should not be used to control lighting such as:
  • Compact Florescent
  • Energy Saver
  • Flood lights
  • Halogen
  • Mercury Vapor
  • Christmas lights
  • Candelabra bulbs

2005 Dodge Caravan with Dead Battery. Replaced and new battery died. Took it in for service. Alternator checked out ok and Drain was within tolerance. Will still die if I let it sit for more than a...

Disconnect battery from vehicle overnight to check for internal battery drain.......just take one of the cables off.
If the battery is still up and starting the vehicle after being disconnected after a day or two......the drain IS in the vehicle and will have to be checked again.
Do it yourself.
Buy a cheap 12 volt test light.
Place it between the cable you removed before.
One end on the battery post and the other on the cable end.
Now....with the key off......
If the light glows brightly....you have TOO MUCH drain.
We want a dim glowing light.
The dim light is just the memory circuits in the electronics and OK.

With the doors closed....take out one fuse at a time until the light glows dim.......the fuse that dims the light is the problem circuit.
If no fuse dims the light...remove relays one at a time.
Remember....some fuses and relays could be in the engine compartment and under the dash.
If no relay dims the light disconnect ALL alternator wires.
Remember....anything that uses power will make the light glow ....keep those doors closed (we do not want interior light drain affecting the test ) and if you have a under hood light check it first by removing the bulb.
We do not want false readings.

Wii not heat

If the ignitor glows and dims with no gas, then it is the gas coils that need to replaced, If no glow, it could be anything from the timer, thermostats, flame sensor or wiring. Ohm the thermal fuse to see if it's open. It may be white and resting on the blower housing.
