Broken Hitachi Xbox 360 DVD Drive

After 6 months of use, the Hitachi DVD drive inside my xbox 360 console has broken. When i load any disc, the laser moves backwards and fowards on the inner part of the disc and Disc Unreadable appears.

What is the cause of this?

First of all the cause is that this error is caused by the adhesive that holds a small magnetic washer heating up and allowing the washer to affix itself to the metal top of the drive. After this occurs, the system can no longer spin the disk as necessary. A great but temporary fix is to get a old cd or dvd, get a piece of paper put the cd/dvd into the console, and when the disk begins to spin jam the piece of paper into the top of the silver dvd drive. You will hear a grinding noise keep it going for about 15 seconds. That is the fix. A good precaution after the fix is to get a cleaning disk with optional fluid and go through the cleaning routine a good ten times. I would say if you have spare cash get a replacement laser module.
Peace.

Wont read games only reads dvds

This is going to be a bit long -- but very detailed, so please read it carefully. There are several reasons that an xbox 360 system will have problem reading discs. The error messages also vary from unreadable disk, no message at all but the game skips, "please insert disc in a 360 console" to "open tray." There are a few reasons this may happen:

1.Bad disc. Check the back of your disc for scratches. If it looks good (or plays fine in another console), then the disc is probably fine. Also-- try more than 1 game to be sure.

2. Bad laser. The XBox 360 has a DVD drive very similar to a PC's DVD drive inside. The drive contains a bunch of parts including a few motors and gears and a laser. The laser is the part that actually reads the disc. The reality is...with all the hours and hours of game play, lasers do eventually wear out. The laser isn't very easy to replace, but it is replaceable. You can find any and all XBox 360 lasers at the following website:

http://store.richspsxparts.com/xb360ac.html

3.Bad DVD Drive. Sometimes other components inside of the DVD drive can become bad such as the motor that spins the disk, the motors that open the tray, etc, etc. You can get a new DVD drive to just replace everything, including the laser, in one shot but there is a catch. The XBOX 360's DVD drive is tied to the motherboard using a software lock. The easiest way to overcome this lock is to buy the exact same manufacture DVD drive that is in your system now, remove the circuit board from the old DVD drive (which contains the software key) and transfer the circuit board into the new DVD drive that you purchase. If you do this simple procedure, there is no flashing involved. The following website carries DVD drives and also provides instructions on swapping the circuit board from the old drive into the new one.

Xbox 360 console can't read disk

If your console has stopped reading discs this can be because the receptors on the back of the drive have overheated and to fix it you will need to send it in or use a good repair guide to do the job.

Xbox 360 open tray error.

This actually concerns the entire loading dock assembly and optical lens. this is an all in one piece. you can separately, replace the optical lens but, if the tray is not operating smoothly,i recommend replacing the entire DVD drive. You can order a new DVD drive at this link below. http://www.videogameall.com/repair-part-xbox360-samsung-toshiba-dvd-drive.html

XBOX 360 Drive gradually would lock up on a game now it only plays commercial DVD movies no games, says drice open or insert xbox disc

1. MS gives everyone a 2 year warrenty, unless you had opened the machine already then your warrenty is VOID

2. Would a commercial DVD cleaning disc be a quick fix? Depending on how bad the laser is broken. If it's dirty yes it would help to a certain degree, but remember these cleaning discs are for maintenace purposes, not to fix the problem. If the laser is misaligned then the disc will do nothing to help you.

3. First of all, if you MOD your xbox 360 it will VOID your warrenty so be very careful with modifications. Secondly, if you get a mod that actually REMOVES the laser and replaces it with another one it would be O.K. if your warrenty is up. If your warrenty is not up, then contact MS about getting a new system. They may have a pay some money, but it's better than buying an entire new system.

4. Is the laser is broken, running the cleaning disc will not help it nor ruin it further.

I hope this helps you. Good luck!

bad dvd drive
Bad Cdrom/dvd
The laser going bad is a pretty common issue with the drives, since it's a Hitachi that spindle motor could be all gunked up with dirt as well and cause that issue also.
if ya have a Hitachi, if it's a Samsung it could just be the laser.
