Have tried it on my latop as well, but am finally on my way, tried imaging the drive but no luck even with undisker. Now am finally using getdataback to retrieve it, this should work, am pretty confident. Every drive needs some free space for buffering data, problem is theres nothing in windows to prevent a drive from bieng filled to the brim as i learnt from this experience. Thanks a lot for your time, incase u think of something else, always welcome. Thanks again.

It's possible that files system, more exactly, the MFT or file allocation table is damaged. it may be caused by disk ejecting while the drive is still working. also it might be caused by virus infection. to fix this you can
step 1: retrieve data from the drive with recovery apps. since it can't be opened now, you need to restore data with professional to
If there is no important data on the drive, you can skip the step 1 and try the following solution:
Solution 1: format the drive directly. you can either format it under Disk Management or Windows Explorer with Quick Format.
Solution 2: carry out ChkDsk to repair file system errors. chkdsk /f g: g is the drive letter of the partition in question and it can be other letter in your case.
Type Y and hit Enter and restart computer to resume disk check if you get the message "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? "

You will need to put up some more info about what type of drive it is, external/internal, what operating system you are with, how old is your drive, what was the last operation you used the drive for?

Thats not a good sign when it says disk read error/ disk corrupted. It usually indicates some sort of hardware failure. Did you try it with other USB ports or another computer for that matter? Look into the USB connector, maybe there is something foreign in there causing the errors (like dust).

Fixing Corrupt Registry

If your registry has gotten corrupted, and re-installing Windows95 over your existing version does not fix the problem,
there is a hidden, read-only, system file on the root of your boot drive called SYSTEM.1ST.
This is the initial system registry created when you first installed Windows95.
To use this file:

Go to your Windows directory
Un-Attrib your current SYSTEM.DAT file (attrib -r -s -h system.dat)
Copy your current SYSTEM.DAT to something like SYSTEM.BAD file (just in case)
Move to your root directory
Un-Attrib the SYSTEM.1ST file
Re-start your system
You will need to install your 32-bit apps and any other programs or changes that modified your system registry
but you will not need to go through a new again. Your 16-bit apps should not need to be re-installed since they do
not modify the registry. You will also retain your current desktop configuration.

Try starting in 'SAFE MODE'.
Click RUN
Type CMD and press ENTER.
Type 'CHKDSK C: /F' and press ENTER.
If you are prompted to shutdown & restart to run the "check disk", do so.
During the restart, "check disk" will find/repair any file-system problems, and then restart in "normal" mode.

Try deleting upper and lower filters in regedit (Registry Editor). See if this helps.

Also make sure that other USB devices can be read on your system.

Double check BIOS settings as well and try to reload default settings. (Make sure USB is on)

Lost file

You will probably have to replace what was corrupt. You may have copies as "volume shadow copies".

To check, right click on the parent folder of any missing or corrupt file and select Properties > Previous Versions and see if anything is there for it.

As for what chkdsk did, you can view the log by running eventvwr.msc and open the Applications log there and find and double click on the "wininit" entry.

Sometimes chkdsk saves partial copies of corrupt files -- good for data recovery, but not executables.

To see if any of these are present, open Folder Options > View and temporarily uncheck "hide protected files"

Look on the root directory (c:) for files saved as "Found(nnn)" where "nnn" is a number.

By the way you should always verify whether the drive is healthy before running defrag. Either run chkdsk on it first, or open a command prompt (start > run: cmd and enter fsutil dirty query c:

substitute any drive letter you want to check.

I have a 128MB USB Flash Drive from Simple Tech. My files have become corrupted and unreadable--Don't ask me how (I've no idea). I deleted everything, but cannot delete one folder, because inside there are...

It sounds like you're trying to remove everything on your flash drive and start over from scratch. The characters that you are seeing are corrupted files. This is usually caused by power fluctuations when the computer is accessing the date on the USB drive. What you need to do is to run a complete Format on your USB drive to remove everything and reset the USB drive so you can use it again.

Error message

I had the same problem with a USB drive and a SD card. Both were only recieving 170 files to the root folder before I got this error. The solution was to reformat each using using 'FAT32' as the file system. This basically is a more modern file system that allows more files and cam about after win95. It looks like some USB drives and SD card are origninally formted with basic 'FAT'.

To reformat right click on the drive in windows explorer and select 'Format...'.

Another option if you dont need all the files in the root flder is to create a subfolder however this was not an option for me as my digital photo frame would not handle this.

Backing up a Quicken file

This is probably due to an update. Quicken and quickbooks perform updates in the back ground on a frequent basis. The easiest way to take care of this problem would be to create a directory called backup on the flash drive and instruct quicken to backup to it.

Provided you're using windows XP, click on My Computer, select the icon for your flash drive, F: Right click and create a new folder and name it backup. In quicken when you go to backup, just change where it says F:\ to F:\backup

this should fix your problem. Please email back if you have any problems getting it to work.
