Question about Toshiba 42H81 42" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Shaking picture I have a 42 inch Toshiba. If it had been turned off for a period of time, the picture shakes when you turn it on. It takes about 30 minutes to warm up and then the picture is fine. The time that it takes to warm up is gradually increasing. I have been told it could be the colour bulbs and if it is, it will cost more to repair than to replace. Any ideas?

Yes.. i repair about 2 of these a month here at the shop. Toshiba has issued a service bulliteen concerning these. What the problem is a cuircit board called the "hypermodule". THere are 11 very very small surface mounted capacitors that have to be replace. Ideally the module can be replaced... more expensive but not by much considering labor is intensive on the capcitors .. but here the trouble... the board is not availble. we charge about 450 for this repair.. the boards not easy to remove the u have to be an expert solder to get these cap off an on.. i personally damaged a couple boards and like i said. boards not availble ...here is a picture of the board the caps are the small circular components. willie@fordtv.com

My Toshiba 50H82 television takes about 30 minutes to clear up and during that process, it shakes. It becomes clear but still has wavy lines at the top of the screen which is about 6 inches.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems listed below.

Problem #1) Convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

The screen is shaking horizontally. It does this when I first turn it on and gradually gets better after about 30 minutes. There are also 2 or 3 vertical lines going side to side while the picture is...

42H83 is a Toshiba first made in 2003.

What is wrong (98% chance) is the HYPER BOARD in this set is now failing----all signal from all inputs is processed thru this board.

Considering the board is now only available on a rebuild basis----and the cost for this is well over 200 dollars not counting labor to remove--replace--set, unless you know someone who is VERY GOOD AT SOLDERING-----not worth repairing.

What happens here is this board has close to 20 surface mounted filter caps---with time and heat they dry out---usually the time before the problem clears up will get longer and longer---leaking caps may start to function to some degree after they get hot--hence the time from dead cold until the set works.

Most caps have 2 leads and are soldered through the circuit board----these are very small caps with tabs on them----and are soldered to the top of the board.

I am sorry to give you not so good news--but based on your description---I am sure it is your problem.

Call around your area telling them model number and you suspect it is a bad HYPER board---if a shop can actually fix it(replace the caps) parts cost would be under 30 dollars---

Any authorized Toshiba repair shop can go online and see the service bulletin for this--they have a large color picture of the board and indicate which caps have to be replaced.

If this information helped you, rate this solution as I do this here for free.

Lines and blurry screen

hi, sounds like u need some solder joints re-worked (probably quite a few for a set that old, but your right it`s a great set), price varies by region greatly, I`m in central florida we would charge 75 for service call & 95-125.00 for labor depending on how long it takes to do the solder rework, hope this answers your question, get it fixed it`s waaay better than the new hd (ha ha ha) sets, video-tek

TV picture shaking!!!

You have a Hyper module problem.Very common with these chassis.Toshiba part # 23148024.This part is no longer available, but it can be repaired.I dont know how much electronics training you may have but it`s a pretty detailed job.The hyper board is the silver stand up module inside the unit right behind the external Audio/Video jack panel. There are 11 little capacitors that all need to be replaced. The value of these caps are 10uf @ 16VDC.I do this job for about $245.00 and the unit works fine.Check with your local shop if it is too much for you.If you don`t know what you are doing you can ruin this module then it`s time for a new set.Good luck.
