HP Photosmart 3210 -Ink System failure - Error 0xc18a0001

I have purchased the above named printer just abouy 15 month ago and it worked fine so far. A month ago the above mention error appeard and it does not allow me to print , fax or do anything with it. The printer tells me to change this or that ink cartdridge and when I do the same problem persists. Any ideas what the problem might be and how to solve it? Or is it that HP programs the printers to break down after the warranty finishes in order to seel you a new one? I dont think HP will be first on my mind should I have to replace the printer. Please help. Thank you very much.

In addition to having the ink system failure error 0xc18a0001, my printer screen also read improper shutdown. After trying most of the above solutions with no success, I did a search for the improper shutdown problem. This is where I found my solution!

The solution is under "Printer will not start" the solution post is by speters9971. "...you can try a sem-full reset to factory default conditions by 1. unplugging the power cord while the printer is powered on and 2. press and hold the OK and Cancel buttons while plugging in the power cord."

This is what solved my problem after hours of searching & repetitive similar solutions!!! The above solutions did not help; some of them seemed to be incomplete or irrelevant for my model. I have a HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-One.

Thank you speters9971!!!!!!!

Clean the the tip of the catridge with distilled water and the copper contact where the catridge makes contact also the problem may be from replacement with the wrong catridge if the ink catridge is not the hp specified catridge the printer will not recognise it.so check and make sure you ar e using the right catridge after trying the above

    1. 1.Press the On button to turn off the printer.

    2. Unplug the power cord and universal serial bus (USB) cable from the back of the printer.

    3. Wait for 30 seconds.

    4. Plug the power cord back into the printer.

    5. Press the On button to turn the printer on.

    6. If Ink system failure does not display, the issue is resolved; reconnect the USB cable and resume using the printer.

If the previous steps have not cleared the message, continue to the next step.

Download and install firmware update from HP.com
Go to the product support page to download the update.
Click Software & driver downloads .
Click on the appropriate operating system link.Click on the Recommended update to fix long power-on cycle and ink system failures link and follow the instructions to download the file. After downloading is complete, disconnect all other USB devices from the computer. Make sure the product is turned on and plugged into the USB port. With the printer directly connected to the computer, click the downloaded file FirmwareEnable_Release.EXE . Click Open/Run . Click OK at the Update successful window. The error should have been cleared from the printer display. If you get a message saying a device was not detected (see Figure 1), make sure the printer is turned on and the USB cable is connected to both the printer and PC and try step five again. If the error message persists, or if you notice ink on the outside of the printer, service the printer.

if the problem still continuesthen you may need to cahange the print head, this may be due to dirty nozzles, or poor electrical contact between printhead and Carriage..

    .
check that the media being used is Hewlett-Packard media or media approved by Hewlett-Packard.

.Perform a Media Qualification to verify the correct media setting is being used for the media that is loaded.

.Check the environmental operating conditions (temperature and humidity affect output quality).

.Press the Down Arrow key to check the printheads.

.Open the top cover and remove the affected printhead(s).

.Attempt to reseat the printhead(s). If the printer accepts the printheads, but still fails the printhead check, replace the lens cover and try again.

.If unsuccessful, remove all the printhead.

.Using a lint free cloth dampened with distilled water, clean the contacts in each carriage slot and on all printheads. This will remove any dirt or ink that may be preventing a good connection.

.Reinstall one printhead at a time and watch the front panel display for the corresponding square to change to a steady square indication.

    .

from the original slot to another, never close the top cover window. The printer may immediately refill and contaminate the printhead(s).

    .

    Following calibrations, verify functionality.

    Performing Service Calibrations
Following each calibration, turn the printer off to store the new calibration values in the EEROM. Turn the printer on (entering Service mode) and perform the next required calibration. Repeat this cycle until all necessary calibrations have been performed.

    1. Make sure the printer is turned off from the power switch on the back of the printer.
    2. Hold the Up Arrow key and the Enter key down while turning the printer on.

NOTE: Continue to press both the Up Arrow key and the Enter keys until letters begin to scroll on the lower right corner of the front-panel display.

Once the message "Status/Ready" is displayed on the front panel, press Enter.

.Use the Arrow keys to scroll to Utilities and press Enter.

.Scroll to Service Tests and press Enter.

.Scroll to Service Calibrations and press Enter.

.Use the Arrow keys to scroll through the specific calibrations and press Enter when the required calibration is displayed.

NOTE: For the best results when performing the Accuracy calibration, use a Polyester Matte film. If Polyester Matte film is not available, use HP High Gloss or Heavy Coated

Did you replace the ink cartridge with an original or a refilled/generic cartridge? Because using generic cartridges can cause this error. If you are using original crtridges, try cleaning the contacts gently with some isopropyl alcohol.

You can also try reinstalling the printer driver after having uninstalled it first.

Try this first and let me know how it goes..

    3. Remove all the ink cartridges.

    6. Press the
      On

If the error code does not display, the issue is resolved.

    If the

It could be that the ink sensor is dirty or defective. Try cleaning it with a damp cloth. If that still does not work, then you will either have to call HP, or get it serviced at a local computer shop..

You could also try an online chat with HP Tech Support to resolve the issue:

Unplug printer from power plug for a couple of minutes, to reset it.

Then try both following reset procedures:

    Reset 1
1: turn on printer and wayt for it to get ready
    2: unplug power cord
3: press '6' and 'Select Photo'(most right of the '6') button and hold pressed
    4: plug in power cord
5: keep holding key's pressed until display shuts down
6: release buttons; message "Semi NVM Reset"

    reset 2:
1: press simultaneusly "arrow left" + "arrow right"
    2: enter '1 2 3'
3: this will get you in to mfg menu

Put original cartridges inside, even if half empty, refilled cartridges can give you problems of this kind. Then try doing head clean/nozzle check procedure a couple of times.
If you still get the problem tou need to replace the printer head

  • Ginko
    Ginko May 27, 2008

If the reset did not work, then likely you need to replace printer heads (also problem to ink sensor and pump can give you same message), your printer uses scalable ink system, this means that differently from other ha printers your one does not have printer head integrated with cartridges. This makes cartridges much cheaper, but you may need to replace printer heads after a while.
The printers heads are located underneath the cartridges, like in diagram below:

I suggest trying again the reset procedure suggested, just to ensure it is not the ink sensor stuck with the error message.
If it does not work as a quotation to any nearby computer repair shop for printer head or ink sensor replacement. The part is not very expensive.

I'm getting an error 0xc18a0001 on my hp 3210 printer. What does it mean? How do i fix it?

Hello,

That code indicates the the printer has the "Ink System Failure" error. This is usually reset-able. That error is normally caused by air in the ink cartridge system. To clear the error you will need to do a purge. We have a free complete guide to perform the purge at: http://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/category/printer-repair/hp-printer-repair/ I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.

2. While holding the " * ", press "#" key and then release both keys..."Enter Special Key Combo" will be displayed...
3. Press "1", "2" and "3" to display Support...
4 Press ">" right arrow button and release when System Config Menu appear....then click OK
5. Press arrow key to display Hardware Failure Status...click OK....
6. When Hardware Failure Status:Clear appeared, press "OK" to clear...
7. Press "OK" again to display "Hardware Failure Status Cleared. Press Cancel To Continue".....
8. Press "CANCEL" as many times to display "Welcome To Photosmart Express" or "Ink System Failure".....
9. The last part is to turn off the printer and unplug at the back...wait for 30 sec, then plug and turn on the printer...if asked, press "OK" to continue and allow the "One Time Ink Initialization" to procede..After this try to print...

Take the printer to a recycling-centre for responsible end-of-life disposal.

It's much more expensive to try to service it, rather than to replace it with a brand-new printer. Try to buy a new HP printer that uses the same ink-cartridges as you have in your current printer.
