Brand new gateway m-6846 vista 64bit

I keep having to take my brand new laptop back 4 times in one week. they keep giving me a new one cause they dont know what is wrong. i did a little research and in 3 minutes i found the problem online. it says something about 64 bit vista not liking anything higher than 3 gb of ram, yet my brand new one comes with 4gb ram on it from factory. how can i fix this so i dont have to keep returning and can enjoy my laptop that i paid for. the blue screen keeps popping up. that is how i found the problem but i dont understand how to fix it? help

The maximum amount of memory that your system can use is actually limited in two ways — not only is there a maximum amount of memory that your computer motherboard can accept, there is also a maximum amount of memory that your operating system (OS) can accept.

For instance, when you install 4GB of memory in a 32-bit Windows system (the most common version; 64-bit systems are typically used only by high-end users), your system will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB.
Relax, there isn't a problem with the memory. Windows allows for 4GB of memory to be addressed, but this isn't 100 percent the same as having 4GB of physical memory.

What happens is that some of the addressable memory (regardless of how much you have physically installed) is reserved for use by page files or by some of the devices that you are using, such as a graphics card, PCI card, integrated network connections, etc., so it's unavailable for use as normal main memory.

The amount of memory needed for these devices is calculated by your system at startup; if you haven't maxed out the memory in your system, it's invisible to you, and all your physical memory (the RAM that's installed) is available for use. However if you've maxed out the DRAM in your system, this amount will be deducted from your physical memory, so you can't use 100% of your DRAM.

The maximum memory limitation varies by operating system; for instance, the 4GB memory limitation doesn't exist in 64-bit versions of Windows.

Memory maximums for current Microsoft® Windows OSs include:

  • Windows XP Home: 4GB
  • Windows XP Professional: 4GB
  • Windows XP 32-bit: 4GB
  • Windows XP 64-bit: 128GB
  • Windows Vista Home Basic: 4GB
  • Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit: 8GB
  • Windows Vista Home Premium: 4GB
  • Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit: 16GB
  • Windows Vista Ultimate: 4GB
  • Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit: 128GB+
  • Windows Vista 32-bit: 4GB
  • Windows Vista 64-bit: 128GB+

My gateway M-6846 notebook stutters when playing music. How can I fix this?

this can be caused by a number of things
are you playing music through your cd rom

If you are using your CD/DVD drive, use a cleaner.

The lens may be dusty and causing skips/stutters place a couple of drops onto the cd and run it

scroll to bottom toolbar (bottom of screen) right click select task manager

applications you will see whats running

if you see anything you dont need running select end now and you might uninstall that specific
program if you or computer does not require it to run

also under processes see what is ticking over in the background again if you see something you
dont need to be running select end now you might have a virus or malware

the speaker plug/outlets is usually at the back of the computer or if its a laptop on the side

you will have to open up the computer to check the lead attached to the rear of the input plug make

sure the connection is good with no dust as dust causes static electricity

clean your computer of dust using a fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure that there is

no MOISTURE in the air line specifically around the sound card and the CPU central processing unit

dust causes static to build up in a computer which can affect all of your computer

hope this helps

I need recovery disk for my gateway m-6846 laptop

Recovery discs for store bought laptops are individualized. You can usually order a duplicate set from the manufacturer of your computer for $10-$20. Here is what I found:

When i use my touch pad on my brand new Gateway just to use my mouse it does other functions such as zooming or scrolling up/down. There is no divider on my touch pad so when i go to use my touch pad it...

There are some things you should do on your own:

1) Gather information. You need to know your Gateway model and S/N, Windows version (XP, Vista, 7, 32bit or 64bit)
To check windows version: Right-click My Computer or Computer from Start menu, choose properties. You should be able to see the Windows version here

2) Go to Gateway website:
http://support.gateway.com/support/default.aspx?cmpid=topnav_support
Click on the "Notebooks" tab and input your S/N.

3) Scroll down to "Touchpad Drivers" section and download the latest driver for your model. Be sure to save the file where you can find it.

4) Install the new driver. It may be helpful to uninstall the old driver first: Start>>Right-click (My)Computer >> Manage >> In left pane, Device Manager >> In Right Pane, click plus sign next to, Mice and Other pointing devices >> Right -click the touchpad and click Uninstall, be sure to check the box, "Remove Software".

See if this gets better. If not, the touchpad/Palm rest needs to be replaced, but getting Gateway to do it (sounds like they tried) may be tough.

At least if you install the new driver, you may be able to disable it permanently, and then use a wireless mouse (which usually is much nicer anyway).

Happy computing!
