There is a clicking sound as soon as I turn on my Schwinn 418 Eliptical machine. I hear the "beep" indicating the unit is on, then a hum comes from the housing area and a loud clicking begins from the housing unit area. This happens when I am NOT on the machine. It has been perfect till now. It has been in the same spot for years in the basement. Hasnt been moved, bumped etc. It gets moderate use. Just happened all of a sudden.

I will keep you posted. The technicians are supposed to let me know whats wrong today. I dont want to think how much a motor is going to run me...if that is what the problem is.

  • Anonymous Nov 10, 2010

The technician told me it is the motor. They are ordering it from Schwinn. Cost will be about $120. Cheaper than buying a new eliptical.

Any results to this problem yet, bryanblum? My elliptical just did the exact same thing...

Not yet, i ended up hauling it to a local fitness store. They said it could be a motor and they had replaced one a few months ago that had the same problem.

Thanks, I've been dismantling mine all day! Looks like the little servo motor continued to turn after the cable was tight, causing something inside to strip (hence the clicking). The resistance magnets (brake pad things) were pulled tight about 1-1/2 inches away from the flywheel (too far). I loosened the cable nut and the cable. I plugged in the power and the servo motor rotated several degrees and stopped. No clicking. After re-setting the cable, resistance magnets, and reassembling the machine, everything seems to be working like normal. I didn't have to remove the servo motor (yet...) Lucky so far.

Computer on my Schwinn Eliptical 418/428 keeps giving me an Error 1- Any ideas what this means.

jlo621-

An "Error 1" message is a generic electrical error code. This error code usually means one of several things: 1) the AC adapter needs replacing, 2) the wires connecting the power to the console need replacing, or 3) the console itself needs replacing. If the console has batteries, start by changing those. If this does not solve the problem, then check the AC adapter. If the problem persists, you're looking at a problem that might warrant the attention of a repair technician.

Hope this helps.

The computer on my schwin 418 eliptical does not work. Is there something I can do to fix it myself? Where can I get it serviced?

Call Schwinn customer service (actually Nautilus) at 1-800-nautilus if it is broken so you can order a new one or they will send you a new one if you are under warranty. They are very helpful. You can also check the power connection on the bottom or make sure the wire harness in the main pipe in the center is properly connected if the system is brand new and not working.

Error code 1 on schwinn elliptical 418 how do I fix it. I have replace batteries and unplugged unit. Error 1 shows up as soon as I turn unit on.

E1 error seems to indicate that the servo which controls the elliptical resistance is stuck. Here is how I fixed this (without using a "crank puller", which would be quicker by far).

You will need a very short phillips screw driver (snub nose), a long phillips screw driver, an allen key set, and crescent wrench.

- Remove the batteries from the unit.
- Remove the screws from the plastic housing (with the long phillips screw driver) on the left side. Do not forget the phillips screws at the front - they are smaller screws so don't mix them with the others. This will allow the plastic housing to flex and move around, but not come entirely off.
- Using the crescent wrench, remove the nut holding the left pedal to the crank. Carefully note the order of the washers on the crank attachment.
- Using the allen key, remove the little pedal attachment piece on the left crank arm.
- Using the short phillips screw driver, carefully reach inside the plastic housing on the top and remove the four screws holding the plastic plate on the outside of the fly wheel/crank. You will need to rotate the crank wheel to reach each of the four screws in turn on the inside of the case.
- Pull off the plastic cover for the wheel.
- Reinsert batteries and gently help the revealed cable (bottom) retract the magnet plate. In my case, the servo worked fine again after helping it retract the magnet plate that was somehow stuck/wedged.

Reverse steps to re-assemble.

Strange noise comes out from the ups after a power cut

The Back-UPS Office unit has five different tones or alarms:

1. Four beeps every 30 seconds (On Battery LED will be illuminated)
This alarm indicates that the Battery Power Supplied outlets are now supplying battery power as opposed to power from the utility. If the UPS determines that the input utility power is unsafe for your computer equipment, the UPS will switch to battery power.
Note: If the power disturbance is brief, you may only hear one or two beeps.

2. Continuous Beeping (On Battery LED will be illuminated)
This alarm indicates that a Low Battery condition has been reached and that the UPS will soon shutdown. Once the UPS transfers to On Battery operation, it can only stay on battery for a limited amount of time. The UPS will sound this alarm about two minutes before the batteries are totally exhausted. Once exhausted, the UPS will shutdown and turn off its output power to your equipment. If you hear this tone you should immediately shutdown your computer to prevent data loss or corruption.

3. Continuous Beeps for 30 seconds (Back UPS OFFICE 250 and 280 ONLY)
This alarm indicates the unit has detected an Overload condition after it has performed a self-test during start-up.

4. Continuous Two-Tone Beep
This alarm indicates a severe Overload was detected while the unit was on-battery operation. This tone will continue to sound until the unit shuts down.

5. Continuous Tone (On Battery LED will be flashing)
This alarm indicates that the battery-powered outlets are overloaded.

6. Continuous Tone (On Line and On Battery LEDs flashing) Back UPS OFFICE 350, 400, and 500 ONLY
This alarm indicates that an internal UPS fault has occurred.
