Question about Bernina Virtuosa 160

Uneven buttonhole sides

HelIo! have a Bernina 163 Virtuosa. I have fought with the buttonholer from day one. It suddenly has decided to make the left (first) side 1/8" longer at the beginning than the right (second) side. I come out with a buttonhole that looks fine on the top, bottom, and right side, but the left side is hanging over the beginning end, and too short on the finished end, thus a gap between the left side and the bar tack at the finished end. Has anyone else come across this problem, or is this something my machine made up in its head? Thank you for any help! wavymouse

Hi, I'm a Bernina tech and can tell you you need to have a technician recalibrate your buttonhole foot to the machine. There is a function in the service program to do this. Also the machine will need a speed calibration once the buttonhole foot is calibrated. This will definatly solve the problem.

The 163 buttonhole sensor can only be calibrated with a special optical filter that is fitted onto the foot lifter bar during calibration, but apart from that, I agree with Richard - get it done by a Bernina service agent.

However, it appears from some user reviews that this model seemed to have some issues with the buttonhole:

I can only sew the first bar of the buttonhole. When I press the securing button nothing happens and the machine carries on sewing the first bar. I just cannot make any of the button holes work. Can I do...

I can't be specific, but I had problems with my Bernina Virtuosa 160 automatic buttonholer.
Check the feeddog teeth height. At their highest point, the FRONT teeth height should be 0.05mm higher than the back teeth.
Good luck.

I have sewn very little with this 160 even tho I have had for many years. I attempted to make a buttonhole recently and could not figure anything out from the manual. How do I make a buttonhole? I...

Instructions would be the same as in the manual.

If you call your local Bernina dealer and ask, they would be able to show you how to do this.

When selecting the buttonhole option and starting the buttonhole the straight stitch reverse sewing doesn't happen after pressing the reverse button

It sounds like the feed block in the machine is sticking. This happens when the machine has been sitting for a time or not had much use. The old grease hardens slightly or "gums up" and the mechanism doesn't return easily to it correct position. A trip to your service tech would be your best bet.

Hi, its very common for these to need to be recalibrated by a technician.
Possibly its time to have your machine serviced anyway as this is usually when they get recalibrated. I don't think you could be using it incorrectly as there really is just one way.

My machine will not sew buttonholes

If your reverse works on other stitches I suspect the buttonhole sensor will have to be tested in the service program. It could be bad. This would have to be done by a tech. You could take a dampend q-tip and try cleaning the lens. It is just above the needle next to the needlbar on the right.
Wish I could help more.

Bernina Buttonhole foot #3A

Hi, you must have an 1130S which means it could also be a circuitboard issue. If the LED/LCD light for the buttonholer does not flash you either need a new RET-Print (circuitboard) or a new buttonhole foot. Sorry to say that you DO more than likely need a new buttonhole foot according to my manual on this machine. No way to repair the foot that I know of.
You should bring the machine in and try it first.
Guess not all news is good news. Sorry.

Automatic buttonholer won't work

Your buttonhole foot needs to be recalibrated to your machine by a technician. Takes about 5 minutes or so.

Bernina Activa 131: buttonhole problem

There are TWO buttons on the machine that have the little u-turn on them. Look for the other one. That is the one that makes the second half of the buttonhole. Look in the owner's manual, it may tell you where it is on your machine. I spent a long time swearing at my machine before I figured out that the reverse is not the only button with the u-turn arrow. The manual is not clear on this. Why they use the same symbol twice is beyond me. Mine is on the front of the machine, down by the needle. Hope this helps.
