Broken Mirror Wheel

Hello,

I am looking for information with regard to replacing the spinning mirror that is located right next to the lamp.

One of my mirror pieces broke and I would like to know if this is a servicable problem.

Thank you.

Hi Sam

This actually called a Colourwheel , but never the less this is very easy to DIY.

You'll obviously have to take off the top cover of the Projector , and you will see that the Colourwheel sits in a bracket that is fastened to the bottom casing of the Projector.

Unscrew the bracket and take out the bracket and colourwheel as a whole. If memory serves me correct you will get the replacement part just like that in a new bracket.

When taking the colourwheel out do remember to take out the lint ( colourwheel's cable - white and very flat ) and also the regulator board's cable - they are normally right next to each other on the Mainboard.

If the replacement part does not come in a new bracket , then you will have to take it out of the bracket by unscrewing the 3 small screws at the back of the colourwheel. Do not remove the small regulator board that is also attached to the bracket !

If you have any further queries , please do not hesitate to post me a request , I will be more than happy to assist you the best I can in here.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya !

The projector comes on but shuts down after only a minute or so.

1. check your lamp---take it and look into it and see if you see any cracks or bubbles in the mirror part and try and look at the stem IN the mirror for any bulges that might look like a vein about to explode---if so the lamp is bad.
2.next you need to make sure all fans are working.
3. if it's not the lamp or the fans, then it goes-power supply, main board.

Mirror or light tunnel collapsing

A weakness that you might experience with your projector is the collapsing of the light or mirror tunnel. Not sure if this is common to DLP projectors only. The symptom is that you see grey bands or shadows on the edge of the TV image - this is caused by a mirror getting in the way of the bulb light. The glue holding the mirrors together seems to weaken over time (3000 lamp hours in my case) and causes one or more of the mirrors to loose its position. For solution, search for "mirror tunnel" or "light tunnel" under all projectors. The problem seems to be quite widespread. I managed to fix my LG's.

I wonder why the manufacturers don't use a rectangular glass tube that is mirror plated on the long sides ?!?! Suppose they want to sell new projectors after lamp or mirror tunnel expiry!

What does a lamp bulb look like when it is no longer good or working? does it look burnt out? Mine looks like nothing it broken or burnt, but my projector isn't showing a picture on the screen. the fan...

look at the lamp head on. an obviously bad lamp will have cracks in the mirror, the stem can have frosty, veiny looking blisters or bubbles, the mirror can have lots of bubbles. And sometimes there are just no obvious signs.

Epson 76C projector that the picture has no red color to it. I have tried the adjustments as described in the manual but no success. The blue and green is great but no red? Thank you.

Youve probably got something gone wrong with your dlp chip with the million mirrors on it, see when the mirror tilts away from the light you get a black shade- tilted toward light lighter shade now throw the color wheel in which gives you color youve got green and blue so the color wheel is fine. Now how to replace chip? Dont. Look for a digital board or video board replace that and that should take care of ya. Good luck hope this helped ya-

Internal mirror broken

Well without seeing the damage I would have thought Superglue would be your answer and just re afix the mirror if it is indeed undamaged .
Otherwise as it has a working bulb ( usually worth more than the actual machine? ) Maybe a replacement unit off ebay can be obtained you would also have a spare for any other repairs . .... Regards Vortash

LP600 - Grainy picture, very poor quality

Single chip DLP projectors use a spinning color wheel between the lamp and the DMD (mirror chip) to produce colors. If the wheel rotation/synchronization is disturbed, colors will not be displayed correctly.
In my case it looks like the wheel became un-synchronized, probably because the projector was dusty/dirty inside (a light senor is used to detect the wheel position), resulting in a grainy, slightly flickering image.
I simply blew out the components with a can of 'Dust-off' and, using a small tool, rotated the color wheel by hand to make sue it wasn't rubbing or jammed.
I reassembled & started the projector and the image was back to normal.

1/2 the screen is viewable

You would be wrong. Lamps do not do that. They either work or they don't, they do not cast shadows or give half an image.

What is going on is the light tunnel has failed. It is a small, 4-sided mirrored tunnel that focuses the light into the optical chamber. It is directly behind the color wheel. I've seen this probelm dozens of times.
