Sounds like you have a bad magnatron tube, check your owners manual as most of them have a 10 year parts warranty.

If the cabinet is intact and the door closes properly there is
absolutely no personal danger. Aside from the brain (timer,
temperature controls, etc.) there are four major components in the
cooking mechanism. They are:
1) step-up transformer
2) diode
3) storage capacitor
4) magnetron
The step up transformer supplies about 3000 volts ac which is
rectified to dc by the diode and stored in the capacitor. The
magnetron converts the high voltage dc to radio frequency energy in
the 3000 Mhz range which induces many small currents in the moist, and
conductive, food which causes internal heating by resistance.

Failure modes usually involve #2 or #4.
If the diode fails there is no heat at all and somtimes a loud hum or
buzz.
If the magnetron fails, the heat is reduced, or absent, and again can
produce a loud hum.

Snapping results from the microwave energy exciting some conductive
particles that can be due to residues in the cooking cavity, or
breakdowns within the magnetron itself. If the cooking cavity is clean
and there are no loose metal objects within it, you problem is most
likely to be a failed magnetron.

These can be purchased new for about $50 but there are tons of usable
parts from discarded appliances. A local technician should be able to
replace this part with a used one for less than $50 total. They come
in about 3 or 4 variations (physical mounting screws, etc.) but can
often be altered to fit safely and effectively.

IF the its within warranty get it replaced, I personally recommend a tech to work on it.......

Good luck..................

My microwave starts however food does not heat up.

Micro wave as the name suggests produces heat when the micro waves aimed at an object causes the water molecules inside the object to vibrate hence producing heat. The gadget responsible is the magnetron. If your magnetron is not receiving ht voltage or receiving but faulty, then your micro wave wont work please take precaution when opening micro wave due to high voltage caps that remain charged sometimes even when it is off.check the high voltage fuse/ diode and capacitor if they are fine and the step up trans former o.k then the only option is to replace the magnetron

Why would my microwave no longer heat or cook?

micro waves use a tube inside that generates micro waves and like a light bulb they eventually blow out. the tube is not considered replaceable and cheaper to just get new unit.

No heating, turntable does not turn, but clock & lights work.

Check to make sure the plastic on the shelve holders or tuntable guide did not wear and expose metal. If these holders or brackets are wore and exposed metal it shorted out your micro wave. They need to be replaced and a fuse needs to be replaced inside the control panel,

Do you cook a lot of popcorn?

Do you place your food items in the center of the turntable as opposed to placing them off-center?

Both can cause repeated heating of the same spot on the turntable, which can stress it and allow it to crack.

You can buy replacement parts here.

I suggest that when you cook popcorn, place a paper plate or two upside-down under the bag and always place your food items off-center on the turntable tray.

Once you have the new parts, I would suggest at least a quick heat test. That is to heat one cup of water on high and it should boil in about 2 to 2-1/2 minutes.

If you would like to perform a more standard heat test, please see my Ask Mr. Microwave page.

If your magnetron is indeed running too hot, then it is probably dying. Sometimes - like a star - they can burn hotter right before they die.

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.
