Exactly the same problem. The solution provided worked... but the problem recurred next time the machine was booted up

  • Anonymous Sep 13, 2008

Same problem here but no upper or lowerfilters in the registry. Tried to do a restore but the also errors. Tried a repair and got stuck in a boot loop. Finally fixed that and I am back to where I started (No dvd). I even tried the "cd Fix" program but it did not work either. Put a new DVD burner in and the same thing. I will soon need instructions on installing a new front window as I am about to send this freaking PC through it!

Hi, The DVD/CD Rom Icon has dissapeared on My Computer. When I go to control panel - device manager and click on the dvd/cd rom drive icon I get the following message in the genaral...

You will need to re-install the driver. Right click the device in device manager and select properties. Navigate to the driver section and uninstall all existing drivers. (It may *not* give you the option to do that, depending on how corrupted the driver is, but it should.)
Reboot the PC.
Upon reboot, Windows should find the new device and install generic drivers. It will probably ask you to reboot a second time.

Probably a codec problem on the notebook. rather than a drive problem. Try a 3rd party media player such as Real Player or Quicktime

In Device Manager right click on the device and select "Uninstall" then at the top click "Scan for Hardware Changes" wait a few moments and it should pop back up and say "Windows has found new hardware . . . Hardware is installed and ready to use" The error should be gone but if not uninstall again and reinstall the driver afresh from the gateway website. IF that doesnt do it the drive died.
