Question about Philips Magnavox 51MP392H Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Blank screen Changed the convergence ic's and a couple open resistors. Now the screen comes up blank (white) and everything was put back together correctly. All three bulbs light up. Does this have something to do with the convergence settings? I can't even get a menu up on the screen and there is no sound.

I actually didn't lift any of the resistors, but the ones that I did change were wide open. All the 6.8 ohm resistors, including the ones I changed, measure 4 to 5 ohms in circuit. None of the IC pins are bridged with solder. I'm hoping I didn't mess something else up when putting it back together. I had all the cables marked and I'm still sure everything was put back together correctly. Is there something else that could be causing this new problem? Or should I just check/change out the rest of the 6.8 ohm resistors?

  • edges77 May 29, 2008

I checked everything out again. When putting the bottom rack back in I must have knocked one of the ribbon cables loose. The cable between the left and center board toward the screen was loose. The screen and sound work fine now. Now I just need to order the book to adjust the convergence. Thanks for all your help.

That chassis will usually burn 4 of the 6.8 ohm resistors two will usually be discolored and two wont be. Did you check all the resistors that are 6.8ohm by lifting one side of the resistor out of circuit. Also did you double check the IC pins to insure none are accidently bridged with solder?

The resistors cant be checked in circuit cause you will get the reading from the circuit instead of the resistor. each resistor must be removed from circuit at least on one side in order to properly check them. Lift one leg of the remaining 6.8 ohm resistors I will bet that some are still open.

PT-47WX53 - Visible Convergence Fault

You need to open the TV. Remove the deflection printed circuit board, access and replace the convergence ICs. Maybe some low ohm resistors are burnt as well. Change those too.

Make sure you do not do any damage to the connections or foil on the printed circuit board. Don't crack the board while breaking loose the ICs.

Also be careful to re-connect all the plugs and the inter-connects between the boards. Don't damage the plugs or connectors. Make sure you put them all back in the correct sockets.

After replacing everything and re-assembling, turn-on and stand back. Look for smoke. If no smoke, look at the picture and see how you have done. Use the auto-convergence if it is available auto-convergence should adjust the convergence grid to an acceptable level. Usually minor touch-up of user's manual convergence adjust screen is all you need to get a good picture. If the customer controls or auto-focus do not work correctly, you have not completed repair.

Do not attempt accessing and fiddling with the service screen unless it is absolutely required.

If there are still problems, get professional service help. Many of the ICs sold by the discount "Shopping Cart" One Stop Kit sites are bogus. They do not work.

Many times consumers buy the New and Improved" IC kits that are offered. Don't even think about it. All low ohm resistors will have to be changed. Many opportunities for damage and misadventure. Your Upgrade kit supplier is re-designing the TV that Panasonic spent millions of dollars perfecting.

Many consumers try to do a convergence repair and TVs become scrap. Check out the TV help blogs, most start with "I installed a set of ICs I purchased on the web, changed resistors as well, Now the TV has a poorer picture than before or it will not start."

If you have no electronics experience or training the chances of success are similar to do-it-yourself brain surgery in a Peruvian jungle with a sharpened arrowhead.

Call local service that knows your Panasonic TV. Ask for price before he comes out. If he won't give a firm estimate for on-site "convergence" repair, call someone else.

Call me in Canada, I'll give you a price.

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Red convergence moves up and down on screen

Your TV has gone crazy on you because your convergence IC's have gone bad.   These IC's operate at a very high temp, and usually only last 4-5 years.
If you remove the back of the set, you will want to look for the BIGGEST heatsink in there, on that heatsink, you will see 2 lage IC's , probably STK392-110, or STK392-120's or something close...regardless - you can go on ebay to order the new ones, but MAKE SURE they are Genuine SANYO IC's and not counterfiet cheapies. the cheap ones may only last 2 months..
You will also need some "Heat transfer paste" - you can pick this up at radio shack.   Once you remove the old IC's, test all the large resistors near them.. pull one side of the resistor out of the board so you can check it out of circuit. they will usually have the value in Ohms, printed directly on the resistor, but you may have to use the resistor color code to find out what value they are....However, usually if there is any damage, the resistor will look like it has been HOT or fried. replace the IC's and any bad resistors, and you should be good to go. If you need to order a resistor or two,
http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/index.php/cName/convergence-resistors   If after replacing the IC's and any defective resistors, the convergence is still bad, make sure to use a multimeter to check ALL fuses on the boards, --- sometimes when the IC's go, they will take out a fuse to the convergence power supply. If you find any bad fuses, replace them accordingly!   If this STILL doesnt make it look right, you will need to find out how to get into service mode and do a coarse convergence adjustment. This information can be found in the Service manual for your set. If you dont have one you can download it at manualuniverse.com
Hope that helps!

Arcs at the Top and Bottom of the screen!

You will find small 1/2 or 1watt resistors close to the ic's, you must measure them and they must be exact ohms. I believe you'll find a couple open or have changed in value, I hope the new Ic's haven't been fatigued. That should fix your problem.

Convergence

If you cannot align, the ICs probably need to be replaced. You can check the input on feedback resistors in front of the ICs with an ohm meter. Some resistors may be bad causing your problem. Usually you would need to replace the ICs and bad resistors and do a full re-alignment to fix.

50h72 replaces ic's but still don't work

Did you replace the convergence resistors along with the Ics? Also if you replaced the ics with open resistors you have most likely ruined the new ICs. You can get a convergence repair kit for your model at the following link which has the ICs and the resistors for your model, and they provide free tech support and instructions.
Heres the link.

Panasonic pt-53tw53 convergence

It looks more like an open solder because you were able to align it properly after replacing the STK ICs, if there was an open resistor(s) you would not be able to get it align.
I would suggest to go back and double check the solder joints on the STK ICs as well add some fresh solder to the resistors nearby the stk392-180.
Good Luck.
