Question about Broan-NuTone ATTIC FAN THERMOSTAT CONTROL

Attic fans Our attic fan keeps turning on and off every 10-15 seconds or so. Is this normal? If not, what do I need to look into? Is this controlled through the thermostat?

Sounds like a thermostat issue. You may want to have an electrician bypass the thermostat to test this scenario, and you may also want to call the manufacturer to get a new thermostat.

I just fixed a Broan-353 with a similar problem - the fan was short-cycling, turning on and off within a minute or less.

These fans have a thermostat which is designed to turn off 10 degrees below where it's set to turn on. Apparently, one failure mode is this temperature delta stops working I've had this happen twice, each time after about 3 years.

Replacement thermostats are available from Broan for about $30 http://parts.broan-nutone.com/broan/Shop It's a 10 minute repair if you have easy access to the fan.

I'm having the same problem and I can tell you that it probably isn't the motor. I replaced the motor with no effects. I'm gonna bypass the thermostat to test it out and order a new one.

Well, bypassing the thermostat did not help my situation. Turns out when my attic is over 120 degrees the fan only runs for 2 mintues on, two minutes off. When my attic is under 120, the fan runs and operates fine, with or without the thermostat. This tells me that the motor can't take the Texas heat and I am probably going to add a few more static vents to help it out. I'm using a Nutone RF59NRPSC.

Combo lite/vent fan/nite light affected by heat?

There's probably a thermal switch in the fixture which turns the fan on when the lights are on for a period of time and heat accumulates in the fixture. It sound like the heat from the attic is setting off the thermal switch. When the attic heat drops, the fixture works correctly.

This is a catch 22 situation, because if the upper housing in the attic is insulated from the attic heat, the insulation will prevent heat dissipation from the heat generated by the fixture's light bulbs. So, for safety reasons, the upper housing should not be insulated.
I'll need to work on this to come up with a fix.

I just installed a master flow attic fan. I ran

Sounds like it could be a bad capacitor (black box on side of motor).

Replace old attic fan motor, or replace the entire fan assembly.

I am assuming you replaced your fan by now. However in the future call Gibraltar Industries, they are the ones who manufacture all fans and motors. My attic motor fan also died and I first called Ventamatic and they wanted $65 for a new motor. I then called Gibraltar and they shipped one our for free. 800-527-1924.

Attic fan stops running after one hour

I need to verify you have adaquate air flow, to cool the motor. If you have a window open, and the crawl hole open is there enough air flow into the the attic? It there is enough air flow and it still stops after about an hour, does this unit have a humidistate and a temperature switch on the housing or extension.
If all the switches are working correctly then I could be the motor overloading/heating shutting down and then reseting.

My nutone attic fan 69nr does not turn on

Hello

Check power from the t-stat to the motor or relay depending on how yours is configured for control voltage. If power is present at the motor. You will need a meter that can read amperage, take a ampdraw on the leads of the motor. See what this reading is, on the motor there should be a rating for LRA (locked rotor amps) if the amp draw exceeds this reading your motor is bad. You may also have a split phase capacitor installed which helps start the motor is so and you have a meter that reads in micro farads you could check the capacitor. the symbol for mico farads looks like a uf. Just make sure you discharge the capacitor to ground with a screw driver or insulated tool, if not it will shock you severly. Another thing you might look for is a reset button on the motor. Most likely this will be a red button somewhere near the bottom side of the motor.
