My ipod nano (4th Generation) will not charge or register to iTunes and every time I plug it in this sparking or cracking noise happens... any ideas?

It sounds like your cable may be damaged or have a short in it. You should be careful because you could potentially damage your ipod. You can go to this link at the apple store to find information on a replacement. You can also have problems charging or syncing your ipod if the cable is not an original apple product, but is made by a 3rd party manufacturer

No light on IPOD

Hold a flash light to the screen, if you can see the display still with the flashlight, its the back light on the LCD.This requires replacement. If you don't see anything at all, it is more likely to be the logic board on the unit. The logic board is an expensive part, and in most cases, isn't worth fixing.

The LCD is a relatively easy fix, but if your not an avid DIYer, it could be difficult. There are also a lot of stores that will repair this sort of thing for you, but when you tack on labor to this repair, you may as well get a second hand one that works.

Resync it to iTunes. You may need to reset it to defaults and then resync it, but resync usually works.

IPod Nano 4 GB -- what gen?

Hello,
If you have the Nano with the smaller screen measuring 1" x 1.25" and got it 3 years ago, you most likely have the 2nd generation. Apple doesn't really have cases on their site for the older nano. I have the same one and purchased my case at Target. They have a good selection of 3rd party (non-Apple branded) cases. You can also check an Apple store if you have one close by.
Hope this was helpful.
Have a great day

You could replace the screen yourself and pay for the screen also? I suppose the warranty repair would be free?

this seems like a hardware problem, most likely you have to send the ipod in for repairs.

you can try another reset and even attempt a restore from this page

reset on the top, restore in the bottom.

heres the apple service assistant
