Hi,do you hear any strange noises? If you hear clicking or like wanting to turn on it could be the board that powers the lamp it's called the ballast. But if you don't hear any strange noises,tv is around 6000 hrs,2-4 yrs it could be time to replace the lamp. The lamp you need is xl-2100 you can find it here: http://www.discount-merchant.com/Sony-XL-2100U-TV-Lamp-p/sony_xl-2100u_replacement_lamp.htm?Click-48173.Have a blessed one!
Most of the Time STKs need to be replaced 2 of them STK392-110s ,they are big black ICs order parts on line or call 1-800-223-3205 or 1-800-628-1118. Also Ck all low ohm resistor around ICs 2.7 ohms usually there is 2 of them bad.
In the convergence circuit, where the amps themselves are soldered to the foil side of the board, may be ring cracked. What you're doing by forcing it to start is causing an arc to form between the crack until the heat has built-up sufficiently to expand that joint and make contact. Eventually you will burn out the amps, overheat the return resistors and/or open some of the pico fuses in that circuit and send the repair bill that much higher... Better to pull that board, get out a good soldering tool and some solder and a good pair of reading glasses and locate / resolder those joints that are ring cracked...

In rear projection, there are 3 small crt's in the rear projecting off of a glass for viewing. All have a set of convergence rings on them, fined tuned so be careful not to rough handle them. You'll have to find the one that is bad, possibly by lightly trying to move the rings. This is a very long and drawn out process but to make it short. These are polarized rings, each ring will move a diff. color on your screen. There is a tighten ring on all three, it should br in the front of them all. Be careful. Have problems call 812-207-4521
