Any suggestions how to get a remote control to work for this unit? Everything is original and all of a sudden the remote doesn't work. I've replaced batteries, ensured the remote is the proper distance and the line of sight is clear to the TV... but I get nothing.
Do remotes often go bad? I don't want to replace the remote if it is potentially something with the TV.
Any thoughts? Thanks, Rick
Suddenly the remote stopped working on my 13 in TV. But it works on another Sylvania TV in the house that is a 19 in. TV.

Without its original remote control, you can't. If you wish to buy its original remote control, contact the authorized service centre, or authorized dealer to your device brand. They can either give you a genuine remote control to your device, or can direct you, from where can you purchase a suitable one.
Unfortunately, TVs don't always work with universal remotes. The original remote probably had a button to control the captions, and there may not be any other way to access those settings. If you can't find caption control settings using the on-screen menu, you are out of luck. The only options then are to try another brand or model of universal remote that may have a button which will work, or to locate a replacement original remote control.
Could be the remote does not operate on the correct frequency, but also may be the IR reciever sensor inside the TV, best bet is to bring your remote to a pawn shop and try it on a set there (they sell older model sets look till you find one like yours). once you determine the remote is OK, check the IR sensor for bad solder connection or replace it by soldering a new one in. Also some Toshibas develop micro CPU issue (the computer IC), another thing you can try is cleaning the main board control area with electrical cleaner residue can load down the control circuits but then the buttons would also malfunction.
You need the original remote controller to be able to switch input modes.Universal ones usually don't work. If you don't have the original remote and can't find it ever or if it is too expensive you can buy an rf modulator ( very cheap) and connect your dvd player, game console etc) to the modulator then connect the modulator to your antenna with a coax cable. This worked for me. It placed the connection to channel 4 and other cable channels are still working,
You can buy the RF Modulator from: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180299245670
