All u do is make your new hard drive the master by setting the correct jumper for it the manual will tell u more. then make the old drive a slave. install yr opreating system it should be installed in drive c: thats the master when done, u do yr normal copy and paste to transfer your files from old drive to new drive.

This might be caused by hard-drive failure. You should run hard drive test from BIOS to make sure hard drive is ok. You can access BIOS by pressing F2 during start up, from there start hard disk self test and wait for it to complete.

If hard drive is ok after test, insert in your original Windows installation media and reinstall OS.

1. you will need to know 1st that the hard drive you are installing is compatible with the desktop.
2. Is the hard drive compatible with the new Operating system (VISTA).
3. Check to see if you have the hard drive properly inserted that is properly cabled and connected. This will render error in installation.
4. Make sure you are installing the Operating system correctly.
5. Some boot sectors become corrupt during a change in Operating system if the hard drive is not properly formatted.
6. Try formatting the hard drive again and re-installing.

I got the blue screen of death on my Dell Dimension 8250. I was able to boot once in safe mode and retrieve 1/2 of my files. Now it won't boot at all and is making a ticking noise. I would like to...

Hi there,

If you have faulty RAM, this can cause massive instability with your system. Is the ticking noise coming from the hard drive? If your hard drive is failing or has bad sectors, this can also cause problems as the Operating System tries to use that damaged sector.

Try to test the unit using a new RAM modules.

Let me know here again for any development.

check the power cable and ide/sata cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard maybe they are just disconnected, if the unit is working properly before you cleaned it, or does the unit detect the hard drive and cd/dvd drive during power on self test, if yes then you do need to re install windows, if you do not have an xp cd then you just have to purchased a genuine copy if you want to troubleshoot it by your self, or just take to it to comp. tech save trouble and lost of your time

Dell Dimension E521 bad sectors

Hi there.
Hard to believe but this can be common depending on the manufacturer of the hard drive as some are not that good at all, some Maxtor's for example.
The best hard drives you can buy at the moment are Western Digital and Seagate, these drives come with 3 - 5 years guarantee so if they develop bad sectors they will replace the the drives free.
The best way to look after your drives is to perform a sector check once a month and keep your internet cache cleared, use a program called Ccleaner to clear the cache and temp files and also keep the registry clean.
I would also recommend you defragment your drive as soon as you have installed a clean operating system or defrag once a month too, that way you will get your full life from the hard drive.

Get Ccleaner here >>>>>>

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Computer not booting up

What are the service lights doing on the back of the PC, two green two yellow, should be something to this affect,4 lights. Try your install again and see what the lights are doing when the error appears. Now take your service tag and go to dell.com.
and see what the error lights means.

Remember Xp is the only operating system that can be run on this pc.

If it was a hard drive problem, the last thing you do is try to install a OS, you get a hard drive diagnostic disk from dell, or get HDD regenerator
1.5.1, its free, it checks the hard drive for bad sectors and can repair them,so you can get your important info off of them, because if it had bad sectors, the problem will just come back. So its better to get a new one.

Hard drive switching (dead one to new one)

Your computer comes with an Sata hard drive. I am guessing that you have purchased a IDE one. If sio , return the IDE drive in exchange for an Sata one. He is the manufactures web site for your machine:
