you can firt try with F8 when u see the windows logo. then select repair option if you can not do this and if you have a xp installation disk or install disk and place it into the disk drive. go thru the process to install and when u get to the hard drive detail screen to format or choose the install location you will see on bottom right either advance or repair and select the repair option. this will look for problems in windows and fix as necessary without modifying your files. if this does not work you may need a disk cloning software clone the drive to another either backup or sd card if big enough. then install windows again and copy files u need from the cloned drive. this option will not let u copy software from clone to new. you will ha e to reinstall those. hope this helps you.
It sounds like the problem is your hardware, the current optical drive you have installed cannot burn disks, not matter what software you download you will not be able to do this without the correct hardware. You will need to buy a new drive that is Read/Write capable from a local computer store.
The CD Burner drive is compatible with your Windows XP the software version is where the problem is. You need to get an updated version of the burner program, something like Nero burning ROM or Roxie EZ CD creator.
