Photoconductor kit? Dell 1700 printer

The photoconductor kit is another word for the drum or imaging drum. All three words refer to the same part.

Here is a link from the Dell site for this model.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/PopupProductDetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=dhs&sku=310-5404

Once you replace the drum, the printer has to be manually reset. If this is not done, the printer will continue to give this print out. By resetting it, the counter is set back to zero. The drum is good for around 30k prints.

From the Online Manual for the 1700, to reset the counter:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/1700n/en/index.htm#online_documentation

To reset the counter, press and hold the Cancel button until all lights flash in sequence.

NOTICE: Resetting the imaging drum's counter without replacing the imaging drum may damage your printer and void your warranty.

Dell 1700 is giving me an error about the Toner. It also prints out a page telling me to replace the photoconductor kit. I have replaced the photoconductor and the toner but it still has the same error and...

The printer has no way of knnowing that you have changed the Photoconductor Unit, unless you tell it (as there is not chip on the Photoconductor).

The Photconductor reset procedure is as follows.

Dell 1700
RESETTING DRUM PAGE COUNTER

1) Leave the power on, insert toner cartridge, and leave door open
2) Press the cancel button and hold till the leds flash
3) Release cancel button and close toner cartridge door

Install photoconductor

the photoconductor is commenly refered to as the "drum" .. its the cylindrical part that picks up and transfers the toner to the paper .. the error message might be telling you its time to replace the drum (they do wear out) or perhaps its not detecting the fact that it is in place .. the photo conductor drum is user replacable so it comes out without too much trouble .. sometimes its part of the replacable toner tank .. it would get automatically replaced when you change toner in that case .. be very careful with the photoconductor drum .. any scratches, finger prints or other damage will show up in the printed output .. dont expose it to bright light ...

Drum life ???

the drum or photoconductor is the part of a laser printer that is lit by the laser, during which it is magnetically charged to attract the toner (ink powder), which it rolls of onto the paper before it's fixed by the fuser.
the drum's time of use is defined by a digital counter either inside the printer's system board, either through a chip in the drum's casing, to ensure the ability to be magnetised and to provide the best possible print quality.
there are tools to reset these counters, although it's advised to replace the drum to avoid loss of print quality, since the drum is very sensitive to overexposure to concentrated light.

2) check the pink drum cleaner (call brush to return the waste toner), it can not clean well sometimes, if the drum surface good.
