This is the second time. The first HP tech talked me through it with lots of codes and about an hour and a half of my time. I'm really frustrated.

If anyone knows how to resolve this it would be great. un-plugging didn't work.

  • catdraggedin Jan 09, 2009

Your solution worked perfectly and saved me hundreds of dollars!

I also spent an hour + on the phone with a HP tech support guy and his supervisor neither would give me the solution since my printer was out of warranty by 5 months.

They did have another solution in mind for me - purchase a new printer from them and ship them back my old one. They were going to replace my C6180 with the C7280. The 7280 looks identical and i couldn't find any differences in the product spec. The tech "supervisor" was going to give me a "great" deal. He would sell me the 7280 for $224 with free shipping, a 1 yr warranty and 1 yr tech support (all of which come with it automatically if you buy it from their web site for $299) So there would have been a $70 savings, but in my eyes it was a $224 deficit.

I wouldn't make a purchase like that without investigating this problem myself and then the if necessary looking into printer repair vendors and finally if a purchase was necessary. . . the other available models, pricing, etc. I clearly explained that I was not going to just buy basically the same printer i have at midnight without looking into other options. After a long time he agreed to give me 24 hours to decide.

As soon as I got off the phone with Mr Tech Support Supervisor I typed the error message into the google search bar and bang - here i am. I tried your solution of holding down the OK and Cancel button and going through the power up sequence and BadaBing - System reset and then the familiar sound of the HP convulsions as it went through its start up process.

I guess the moral of the story is, don't be dooped by sales pitches, always investigate. HP's financial gain would have been my loss, since not only would they have sold me a new printer, they would have simply reset my old one - cleaned it up and resold it as a "refurbished"

So now that you know my story. . . I just want to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

"Best Solution" posted by "Guest" worked perfectly for me. My printer was showing a "failed ink system" error (error 0xc18a0201) and the stock solution did not work. Next step was to take it in for service if it wasn't for this posting. I am up and running again. Thank you so much!!!

I can't believe holding down the ok & cancel button worked. Thank you very much! I was ready to go buy a new printer. I have to use my printer all day long for my business. If my printer does not work I don't work. What a life saver!!!!

Well, as always, any problems with HP, Vista or other manipulative consumer corporate product; here I will find others in the same boat. I played around with your suggestion of holding the OK and help down etc. Thanks so much, it didn't quite work in the same exact sequence, but prodding at the buttons and unplugging and plugging the cable back in, powering off and turning on again in varius orders until something happened seems to have re-set it!
We have had an ongoing problem with Cartridge World cartridges and I am interested to know if anyone else has. We have had one printer completely pack up using Cartridge World replacement cartridges (would not recognise the black anymore) and they could not fix it at the shop so sent it for re-cycling. So, we had to buy a new one and we stuck to HP cartridges, but being in two places at once needed to purchase a second printer.
The two we have now still take the same cartridges - a C7180 and C6280. Cartridge World assured us that now they have a new chipping machine, they do not have any problems, so we said we would try again...
And this is where I came in... the older one - C7180 kept saying that cartridges were damaged or missing and then getting error 0xc18a0201.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the errors being related to the refilled cartridges?

Thanks so much!
Does this mean I am a Geek?

Unplug power from printer. Hold down "OK" button and "Help" button. While holding both down, plug in power. Continue to hold both buttons down until unit powers off. After it powers off, release both buttons and power unit on.
