The set went blank. No sound, no picture. Left it set for a few days and tried it and low and behold it worked, for about a week. I can hear a humming sound when it is turned on, like the power supply is on. The red light blinks in the front panel. Any ideas?

Re: No Picture, No Sound
Dust tends to be attracted to static generating devices like TVs and this dust creates a insulating blanket on circuit boards which then fails to allow the board to cool down properly. Specifically, the board(s) that converts the power coming in from the wall socket to various voltages and amperages to supply the variety of functions in a modern TV today. Additionally, to this dust blanket effect, circuit boards that heat up and then cool down often suffer from "Electronic Fatigue". This is a phenomena resulting from the molecular structure of the boards base material structure changing state many many times (cold/hot, hot/cold). Eventually, the fatigue causes come components, resistors for example, to fall out of their designed spec and range of tolerance. Once the electronic components fall out of its range of tolerance the engineered design of the circuit board will either fail completely or work weakly and then fail. In electronics, for TVs in this example, the physics of the circuit board and its onboard IC chips either work correctly or don't and when they don't a fail safe device turns energy off to all onboard systems to avoid extra ordinary damage that would most likely result in a fire.. or worse.
Sorry this sounds long winded but, I believe in giving a thorough answer and to not assume what your knowledge level is or isn't.
Back in the Day, what we termed TVs like your example was a TV 'on the blink'.

Possible cause of the problrm is bad/poor solder on the grounds for the tuner circuit shield an the bottom (solder side) of the circuit board. Grounds need a wire jumper from point to point. This was a common problem for those sets and ocassionally it would take out the eeprom chip with it. (Various other problems were shrinking picture/fuzzy picture and intermitt. power)
Flyback is going out in this unit and would cost $120 for a new flyback if I were to repair it for you. So you have two choices have it repaired on recycle it! The repair these days on TUBE tv's are not very cheap because of having to find parts for them. Rulds2008
1) When the picture "stops", does the standby light blink at all?
2) Can you post the model number please?
Some of these sets are known to have problems with the picture tube as it starts to age. There are some workarounds for this that can extend the life of the set for a short time. Without the model number though, I can't confirm that this set is in that catagory. Please supply responses to the issues above and we'll continue from there.
There is a install kit 483531057673 for this model when the set is dead. The kit will contain 7404 and the Horizontal Driver Transformer 5402 along with resistors that will limit stress on 7404 and includes complete instructions
Rca has been known to have bad solder joints in the deflection circuits. Usually around the flyback and transformers.. check it over real good. Just be careful as you can still get shocked after the powers removed the capacitors and picture tube will hold a charge in them.
A few weeks ago my set started flashing to a black screen. Now a couple of weeks later, i have no picture, but the set turns on and i have sound. The standby light is flashing. I purchased the set in 2000 so it is seven years old. This is the first problem. Could it be all three of the bulbs?
Could it be all three of the bulbs?
as you say that sound is ok that means your power supply &high voltage section is ok.
please check chroma ic luminance section or system control section stand by ckt
Sounds like you have lost video somewhere in the video circuits. Possibly the picture tube could have gone bad or lost filiament voltage.
You can check to see if you have high voltage by holding your bare arm close to the screen. The hairs will stand up if you have high voltage. Absence of high voltage will also cause a black screen, but the sound might not work either since on some sets the power for the sound is supplied from the same circuit as
the high voltage.
This set is very popular for the capacitors to dry upa and go bad in the main SMPS as well as the switching power supply. If you have no know how on how to test capacitors or solid state electronics please take the set into a repair shop for an estimate
