I want to buy a new CPU fan for my notebook

I have a IBM thinkpad notebook which was bought in China in 2005. The model is 1846cc6 (discrete graphic).

Now, there is a big noise with my notebook. I want to buy a new CPU fan to replace the old one. Could you please give me some assistance?

Thanks!

Fans are fairly easy to find and replace. Open the notebook and see what size it is (OD and thickness) in mm. Most run on 12v, but some are 5v. There should be some lable or marking on the fan. Then go to www.mouser.com, and select a fan that matches the dimensions and volts. Mouser has a large selection. Sometimes the connector for the fan is tiny, but it is a quick job to splice the new wires in place.

Changed the CPU from 1.8 to original thinkpad 2.2. bios CPU speedsetting " automatic". thinkpad is not starting, only the fan. ?

Points to incompatible or possibly damaged CPU. Are you sure the CPU is the right one (compare the pin and chip arrangement on the underside of the CPU), as some are rather similar.

If it was known to be a good CPU, replace it with the original and download and flash the bios with the latest upgrade.

I have a couple M90 & when I boot them up all I hear is the fan very loud & no video I've opened the unit up everything is in order

Hi,

I have met similar problems with IBM ThinkPads. From my experience with ThinkPads, the problem is usually associated with faulty graphics chip on board.

Sadly, there is hardly a solution to this problem except getting a new motherboard. If it is a desktop, then I suggest you try usinjg an add-on graphics card and try booting the machine.

The slightest of jolts and it crashes why a new fan has been fitted some 8 weeks ago appx and it started to crash just after that ??

Verify that the person who replaced the fan correctly removed the old heatsink (thermal) compound and replaced it with new compound. Verify that the fan is connectect to power - you should hear it spin up intermittently during use, especially if you stop the Thinkpad in the Setup program when turning it on. (Pressing F2 or ENTER usually takes you into the setup program - press the key indicated on the Thinkpad screen on initial power on). The fan should be audible within 10 to 20 seconds roughly. If you don't hear the fan power-off the Thinkpad and check those two things.
Caution: Excessive heat can permanently damage the notebook computer! Don't let it run for more than 60 seconds in SETUP without a working fan because the CPU will run at 100% load while in SETUP. (It's normal behaviour though because CPU Idling isn't implemented in the SETUP program)

I need to have a latest graphics card in my IBM Thinkpad R52. Can I upgrade it or should I go for buying a new laptop instead?

Hi,

I recommend to buy new unit instead of upgrading it!

The old IBM Thinkpad cannot support anymore new graphic cards and the future applications coming and new hardwares.

Here is the ATI driver page on the Lenovo support site. They list the XP driver for your model. Download and reinstall to see if this solves your problem. If you get errors or if you are not running XP please post beneath this thread with additional info so I can follow up with you...

Ibm thinkpad t23 shutting off after 10 minutes or so

Your CPU is overheating and the solution is a laptop cooling pad which will save you the cost of another motherboard.

My ibm thinkpad t23 needs a new cpu fan which i have but cant work out how to get at it

Go to this link: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4UYM3F. On that page is a PDF file which should cover your model. Look at the section called "Removing and replacing a FRU" (Field Replaceable Unit). Look at the one for fan assembly removal. It references other sections that are necessary to get the fan out. When done, just reverse the steps. If you're not comfortable working with small parts, have someone else do it. It's just like working on a desktop, only smaller, more delicate, and there's no consistency between manufacturers.
