Try using a card reader until the problem can be resolved with your camera.
Format your memory card once you have the images backed up. Try another memory card to see if it works in the camera. If another one works, it is probably a faulty card, but if it doesn't you may need service for your camera.
Call Canon tech support if this doesn't work.

It sounds like your card must have been partitioned somehow. Have you tried a data recovery service? I'm not sure if this would apply in your situation, but you can try www.z-a-recovery.com . I hear that it's free and very effective. You would need a card reader to use that software. I have not tried it myself, but have heard great reviews from people who were able to recover images from cards that had even been low level formatted.

    Hope this helps!

I recommend getting a USB card reader for your memory card.

You should make sure that the camera is on for the transfer. If that doesn't work, try another USB input.

I have a Canon Digital camera, Powershot A540 and I lost my installation disk. Where can I obtain a copy so I may be able to reinstal the software on my computer? Thanks

You don't need any software.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

A540 says "memory card error" " card locked" but 4gb card is not locked - can access card on card reader - copy on and off. a540 works with 2gb sd card no problem. please help?

The A540 works with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work in this camera. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.
