The government mandated that gas appliances start using electronic ignighters because pilot lights would keep blowing gas even after they blew out now the way they work is calibrated on how much amps the glow bar draws the rest of the amps go to the safety valve to open it when the glow bar is drawing enough amps to be hot enough to ignite the gas now what this means is even though the glow bar glows it can still not be hot enough to ig night the gas so the safety valves don't get the right amps to the solenoids to open so you could have a weak ignighter or bad solenoids on the safety valves now i would lean toward the solenoids but i would buy both and first replace the solenoids then the ignighter if the solenoids work take the ignighter back

Whirlpool dryer heating sporadically?

Remove the lower front panel and turn dryer on. The ignitor should glow bright orange first. After Ignitor glows brightly the next thing will be the flame lighting as the gas valve opens with a click. All this should happen within about a minute or so.

If flame comes on but goes off quickly It's likely one of the Gas valve coils is opening a break in the coil as the coil heats up. This coil will shrink when cool and be able to run again. The coils are purchased as a kit.

If ignitor goes off and no flame comes on the coil kit is likely needed because one coil is fully broken inside its case. If flame goes on but shuts off shortly the problem is as described above and the kit is needed.

There is a flame safety assembly on the can above the burner. If the airflow is poor. the flame tip may activate that safety and turn the flame off. Or the flame switch may be open and not allow the flame to come on at all.

The Flame switch can be tested for continuity with an ohmeter but the valves may ONLY show bad with power applied and can not be tested with a meter as they will test good.. Good Luck

Dryer is not getting hot

These dryers have an auto spark ingnitor just like a gas stove. They do go bad and need replacement. Upon turning on your dryer, you should hear the ignitor click at least once to ignite the burner. If not I would check the continuity to that ignitor first

Dryer won't get hot

First thing to check is the ignitor underneath the drum. (You have to open the panel to see it) It should glow shortly after the dryer starts, then the flame starts and the ignitor shuts off. If the ignitor does not glow then it or the thermostat is bad. If the ignitor is glowing but the gas does not light then the gas valve coils may have to be replaced. If the gas ignites but does not stay on either the flame sensor or the coils are at fault.

Igniter only glows on permanent press cycle and not timed cycles

I unplugged the ignitor and put the leads from my multi meter into the plug to monitor the signal to the ingnitor. I got 120 volts only when I turned the timer switch counter clockwise or to the permanent press cycle. When I turned the switch clockwise or to the timed cycle I wouldn't get the voltage to the ignitor. While in the timed cycle, I turned the switch counter clockwise and as I started counter clockwise pressure on the switch knob I got 120 volts to the ignitor. There is a little play in the switch and when taking up the play in the counter clockwise direction the switch would engize the ignitor. The timer switch is bad.

Does the ignition glow when you start the dryer? if so you have power to gas valve and ignition system. if not you may have an open thermostat or thermalfuse.

If the ignitor just sits there and glows all day, you have other problems, It could be a gas valve, or ignitor sensor.

I have a Whirlpool Gas Dryer LGV6848AWO.

the ignitor bar that lights the gas might not be coming on, the coils that open the gas valve in the dryer might not be opening the valve, or the flame sensor might be bad which would not allow power to the ignitor. these are the most common problems with whirlpool gas dryers
