Lexmark 5400 printer

I have 2 questions. I installed a Lexmark 5400. It prints fine from MS Word, in black and white. It will not PRINT in color, and it won't PRINT webpages. But, it scans in color just fine. What do I need to do? Thank you! Leslie

    1. With regard to the printing in B&W only: I can't find the preferences for color. I can find the preference for paper type, quality, number of copies, print from back to front, etc., but not to specify color. My other printer was an HP and I could find the color preference easily but not with this one. It is a Lexmark 5470 if that helps.
    2. When I find a webpage that I want to print, I go to File and choose Print. Then I get a message that it can't print. "Printing failed when starting the document."
    Thanks.

I have a brand new color ink (came with the printer) and it must work or it wouldn't be able to scan in color, right?

  • ljcprague May 22, 2008

    Windows XP 5.1 home edition

  • ljcprague May 22, 2008

I just looked on my printers folder in My Control Panel. It looks like I have the printer installed twice, once called Fax Lexmark and once just called Lexmark. I don't need a fax since I don't have a telephone. Should I uninstall just the one that says "fax" and leave the other one? Might they be conflicting with each other somehow? The printer that is selected is the plain Lexmark, not the fax Lexmark. Leslie

  • ljcprague May 22, 2008

Aha! No, it has the old HP printer listed. How do I change that?

  • ljcprague May 22, 2008

I don't know how to check which port it is on.

  • ljcprague May 22, 2008

    The port says "USB."

  • ljcprague May 22, 2008

I deleted all other printers and faxes. Now the only printer I have is Lexmark. The printer will now print webpages, which is great! It still doesn't print in color. The printing preferences on the printer logo in control panel does not give me a choice to print in color or B&W, although it does have a choice to enable kodak and I checked that. It says it will automatically choose the color but it sure doesn't do a good job because I have been trying to print a color photo for the past hour. I am using regular paper because I don't have printer paper. Is that why? And the port just says USB. I have other ports named LPT and COM but they are not in use. I am afraid to uninstall the Lexmark, but if you advise it, I will, but I don't know how. Leslie

When you do {Ctrl + P} and view the "native print dialog" box, in the Printer - Status: line, does it say Ready?

Where it says Printer: Name - is there only one listing in the dropdown for your Lexmark X215 printer?

Since it scans in color fine, you should check the printer properties on the computer to see if it is set to print in black and white only.

About the webpages, how are you trying to print them. Are you going into file>print or what are you doing. It should work automatically but get back to me on what you are doing to print webpages and also let me know if you found the black and white option.

yes correct about the color cartridge, when you go into file print for a normal document, there should be a check box in advanced properties or printer properties that is black and white only.

Check to see what port the computer says the printer is connected to. Try uninstalling and reinstalling it onto a different port as that is what seems to work when this error comes up.

Let me know how this goes

Just delete the fax printer icon and see if that helps and make sure the other one is set to default

Our lexmark that we used to have would have multiple ones and it worked fine but now we use HP. Have you checked what port the printer is on at all?

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri May 22, 2008

you can delete the old HP printer icon

you can right click on the new printer and set it as default

To check the port go to
Start>Printers and Faxes and then right click on the printer and select properties and it should be in the ports tab

does it say which usb, there should be more info than that. After removing the HP printer is the lexmark working yet, also have you now tried to uninstall and reinstall the printer?

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri May 22, 2008

Lets start with updateing your software. But I will need to know the exact model of your device. Lexmark x5400 series but is it x5450 or what are the last two numbers? Thanks.

Its most likely the drivers or a setting somewhere.

Color problems start from your print cartridge or from your printer settings. This maybe your cartridge runs out of ink, colors will fade or disappear.

-or- the nozzles can also clog. printers include software utilities (including one for cleaning nozzles) that let you clean and align cartridges and print heads. you may try cleaning the printer to solve this issue

& make sure you have updated drivers and the correct paper type for your job.

check the print quality and paper type settings in your printer Properties dialog box and in your application’s print settings. Printing Draft quality jobs can often result in strange color output. Your printer’s configuration utilities may also have color management controls. Find them either as part of your printer’s Properties dialog box (click the Color or Advanced tabs) or in a separate application installed as part of the printer setup process. Use these to adjust Tone, Brightness, Levels, and other settings.

My lexmark pro901 work print color or black & white

Are you having some issues with your printer? Can you give me more details about any issues you're experiencing on your printer?
If you meant to say that your printer is not printing "color" or "black and white", make sure your firmware is updated. Please visit the Lexmark website to download and install the Lexmark Pro900 Series Firmware Update.
The update helps fix print quality issues and will give you a highly reliable print system. If this does not help, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.

Lexmark 3600-4600 stops at 34% when trying to print a test page. Color ink is low, but I only want black in any event.

If your color ink is already empty or not substantial for printing, then you must replace it with a new cartridge. The Lexmark printer will continue to print when there's substantial ink in the cartridges.
If you prefer to print in black and white as your default print setting, please follow the steps below: (make sure your black and color cartridges ink levels are good)

For Windows OS:

1. Go to Control Panel.

2. Open Printers and Faxes.

3. Right-click on Lexmark 3600-4600 Series print object and click on Properties.

4. In the Lexmark 3600-4600 Series Properties window, go to Advanced tab. Click on Printing Defaults.

5. In the Lexmark 3600-4600 Series Printing Preferences window, under Ink Use, select Print using black ink only. Click OK.

6. Click OK button in the Lexmark 3600-4600 Series Properties window to save the changes.

Your printer will print in black and white draft mode the next time you send a print job to the printer.

For Mac OS:

1. With the file (you wish to print) open, go to Print. A window will pop up.

2. Select the Lexmark printer.

3. Expand the arrow pointing down beside printer name if you're not able to see other options for printing. Look for Quality and Media.

4. Under Paper tab, select Print in Black and White.

5. Save this as your default print setting. Click Presets option and choose Save as. You can personalize the name for this default print setting (e.g. Black and White Draft or My Setting).

Select this Preset name every time you print your files/documents.

Will the Lexmark C720 print with only the black

There are some Lexmark color laser printers that are capable of black-only printing w/o the color cartridges installed, unfortunately, the Lexmark C720 printer is not capable of printing with only the black cartridge installed.

In the printing preferences you need to select Black and white.

1. open the document you want to print
2. click file
3. click print
4. select printer from list, then click on preferences
5. look around the pages.

In Color tab I found a print in Grayscale - this setting will print the document in black and white colors, the pages may be diffrent on diffrent printers. look for black and white setting or Grayscale.

Lexmark z1300 printer - one cartridge

if you look at the options in the printer there should be an option to use the color cartridge to print black. How does this work? Well what the printer will do is mix all three colors to make a light black. This will eat up your color cartridge faster but is useful when you are out of black ink and you need to print

Lexmark 5400 series paper jam

As several previous posts said there was a pieces of paper folded up inside. Per a previous post remove the sheet feeder rack. At this point I removed the two outside screws (of the three) on the backe. After this the whole top lifts about 3/4 inch (19mm) to give your fingers more room to clear it. Looks like she will print another day.

Thanks for the tips on here.
