Lens retracting but won't stay open

When I slide the lens barrier open, the lens will come out, but won't stay out. The green light flashes as if it would still operate if it weren't for the lens issue. Can I fix this myself, or is it a quick fix for a professional?

The slider is held in its groove by a plastic liner and part of mine wore away with the upshot that when I slid it open, the tiny pin on the slider dropped back a little way. We are only talking a tiny amount here but it was enough to activate the switch to reclose the lens so the thing was sliding in and out of its own accord as I rocked the slider.

I simply superglued in a tiny piece of plastic in where the worn away bit was and it cured it!

Hey kbwilson,
This could be a quick fix for an authorized service technician, but it could also be damage to the lens and the only way to know is to have it looked at by an authorized service technician. A common cause of this problem is some kind of obstruction in the lens movement (i.e. sand in the lens), which should be able to be remedied by a cleaning of the lens by a technician. I would not attempt fixing the camera yourself because you could end up doing more harm than good.

Sincerely,
Allan

Lens will not retract. orange and green lights come on, but preview screen remains dark and lens will not retract when I trun it off.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Lens won't come out

It sounds like the sensor that tells the camera weather the cover is open or closed has failed or come loose. This is a fairly common issue on cameras with the sliding lens covers. Our shop would charge around $50 in labor to fix this issue if it is that sensor. If a part was required it would be somewhere between $20 and $50 depending on what Olympus charges for the part. Cannot speak to what other shops may charge. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
