When i hit the letter U, I, O, P, J and so forth on my mini keyboard, I get the numbers 4, 5, 6, * instead. In essence I'm getting what on the upper right corner of those keys

Sounds like NUMlock, or another function key like that. Are those numbers on the keys themselves? That's a common problem for laptop keyboards that do not have number pads.

You might have a hardware issue with your laptop keyboard. You have at least 2 options:

1) connect a "normal" USB keyboard to your laptop and use it, instead

2) run the On-Screen Keyboard (osk.exe) and access the characters/keys you want from there

that is the keypad for a keyboard to get back those letter you will need to press the Fn button and on the top of the keyboard where there is a list of F button press the one that looks like a keyboard. if that doesnt work try Fn and num lock

Hit Function and F11 (F11 on my mini is num lock)
You need to turn off numlock to go back to letters. If F11 doesn't work look at the function keys for numlock and then hi FN + F##

press fn (lower left of keyboard) + numlk(upper right)

You are in Num Lk mode. To leave this mode,
press the NumLk key again, a green LED (1) will
go off indicating you are no longer in this mode.
The Num Lk key usually is in upper right corner of the keyboard.

You should be able to turn off the built in numeric keypad by pressing the fn key and the num lk simultaneously. The num lk is directly above the +/= key. If after doing this you still find you only momentarily turn off the numeric keyboard then there is another underlying issue. At that point you should take your unit to your area HP repair center.

Try FN + Numlock

1. Open the on screen keyboard by going to "control panel" then "Ease of Access Center" then click on "onscreen keyboard".

2. click and hold down the "Fn" key on the physical keyboard and then hit F11 on the onscreen Keyboard.

3. All Fixed. Spread the word.

If you have the wrong Keymap in your Settings files the Computer cannot see and will map letters and numbers where it is told to.
Try to find the correct map for your Keyboard and set that up on the control panel /System Preferences of your Computer... C
