Question about RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100
I can only hear people talking when I have the Pearl on speaker
I to faced the same problem.
First of all disable bluetooth in the phone and switch off the bluetooth device.
Now try to make a call and see whether you can hear it or not.
If you are unable to hear then try to press the Mute button (which is on the top of the phone).
I hope you should be able to hear the voice now.
It worked for me.

Pearl's speaker volume is generally pretty low, but quite OK for a reasonably quiet room. Make sure you press the 'P' key to turn on the speaker phone. You will get an icon in the display window which indicates it. Also, of course, make sure you turn the volume all the way using the keys on the side. Watch the volume slider icon to make sure it's all the way up.

I've had my pearl for 2 years and only just encountered the problem. I started to get the problem when I upgraded mine to the latest operating system. I am going to try to go back a version to see if this helps... In the mean time, if you re-boot the phone sometimes it comes up without the problem, but usually re-occure next time you re-boot it. I am getting around it by doing the following:

I don't have a solution...I have some bad news!!! I'm on my third pearl...in a year, tmobile will no longer replace it because I'm off my warranty. Every time, the same thing, I can only hear if I'm on speaker phone. This last time when it happened, I went in to the store, and there were three other customers in there, same problem...same phone. I will never own a Pearl again!!!

If you have done everything software-wise and it is still not working, here is DYI to replace the earphone piece in it
1) order a hardware online (search "8100 pearl earphone" on ebay)
2) buy T5 and T6 screwdriver from home depot
3) watch how to do it at youtube (search replace pearl 8100 earphone on youtube)
4) DYI to replace it (it worked for me)
