The stand should be attached with some screws right where it connects with the TV. Carefully, lay the TV screen down on your bed and look for those screws on the back bottom somewhere.

Why type/size screw fits in the tv base stand?

Depends on the make and model of the stand. Best to ask where it is sold or serviced. Or take another one out and have it matched up.

I just purchased a 52 inch phillips tv and the stand that the tv sits on adds 2 inches which doesn't allow the tv to fit in my entertainment center. What can I do?? I need a shorter stand...

Just take off the stand altogether if you can lay the TV close enough to a solid vertical support.

My 47'' Philips spent about a year without a stand sitting on a desk and leaning on a wall.

It's heavy enough and as you approach to completely vertical position its main force will be pointing down, not forward.

If you can't lean it on anything solid or if it doesn't sit well while in an entertainment center...not sure what I'd suggest....short of adjustable wall mount stands...

More than likely it is a power supply type problem and could have multiple components bad. They are no fun to work on either, so I would either have it serviced (Expect $250-400) or replace it as the price of this size set has decreased dramically the last few months. To get a feel for what brands are more reliable, check out the last few issues of Consumer reports at your local library.
